How you wake up and start your morning routine can make or break your day. And if there is one thing we know about the working week, it’s that the morning commute can be a little stressful when you’re caught in traffic.

If leaving home at an ungodly hour to dodge the traffic doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, there are a few different things you can try to improve your morning mood (even if you do get stuck on Gympie Rd for the fourth time this week).

Although there is no proven formula for the perfect morning routine, of all the productivity tricks and hacks, we’ve found that successful people swear by these three things to set their day off on the right foot.

Sweat The Real Stuff

We all know that exercise is good for us. But, if the thought of adding anything to your daily to-do list is out of the question, getting it out of the way in the morning is a smart way to start the day. Whether you’re an early riser or a serial hitter of the snooze button, it may be time to think about adding in a 20-minute yoga session or a walk around the block. Sweating it out in the morning is the best way to stay physically, emotionally and mentally healthy, and you’ll stop sweating the small stuff during the day.

Set A Wardrobe Goal

Most mornings can slip away from us quicker than you can say rise and shine. But, if there is one element of your morning routine that can be eliminated, it’s choosing what to wear each day. Your smooth-sailing morning can quickly turn to chaos when you’ve lost an earring during your eighth outfit change or your blouse needs an iron. It’s time to ditch the ‘throw-on-whatever’ mentality and set yourself the goal of selecting and styling your outfits the night before. Before you know it, you’ll be wearing outfits you wouldn’t be afraid to wear if you ran into the editor of Vogue.

Check In With Yourself

Now that you’ve streamlined your routine before you hit the road, it’s time to rethink the way you get to the office. Let’s face it, no one finds pleasure in being caught in traffic. But with a few extra minutes up your sleeve, it’s time to look at those red lights as a win. Use this time as a chance to connect and catch up with your mum or your bestie, or listen to that podcast everyone has been raving about. If you really want to take your commute to the next level, software such as Apple CarPlay can make you more productive than you could have imagined. It syncs to your iPhone so you can chat hands-free, send and receive texts and emails using Siri and listen to your fave Spotify playlist or podcast. If you absolutely must work while on the move, this is the easiest way to do it.

Get Into Gear

When the team meeting kicks off at 9am on the dot and you’re at least 10 minutes away, coffee is essential but small talk with the barista isn’t. This is when using your car’s multimedia system to send the local café your coffee order ahead of time can come in handy. While you’re at it, you can also use voice command to send an email to your team letting them know you will be ready to start the meeting right on time.
