Let’s be real: sometimes you just need to put your head down and get sh*t done. From assignments to working OOO, side-hustles to passion projects, sometimes the kitchen table or cluttered home desk or packed uni library just won’t cut it. Plus, sometimes you just need a new locale to give you the creative juice and inspiration boost you’re craving. For optimal hustle-factor, a temporary workspace can be a godsend to your productivity.
As someone who appreciates a steady table, coffee by the gallon, and just the right amount of people watching to keep them entertained, there are a few local spots that deliver every single time.
Read on to discover where to go when you need to get sh*t done.
Stalled Espresso | Albion
If you’re working OOO, make the most of it by actually getting outdoors. Stalled Espresso is a stunning café on a back road in Albion and, while there is plenty of plush sofas and spacious tables inside, it’s their back courtyard that we love the most. With streaming sunshine and shaded corners, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy some fresh air and get a vitamin D boost.
Day Made | Woolloongabba
Despite denying our repeated requests to inject their mouth-watering Coffee Supreme brew directly into our veins, we love the Day Made team. Flooded with natural light and with a short & sweet menu of eats, it’s a great spot to set up for a couple of hours. Plus, as magicians of coffee, the legend behind the machine will help select the perfect bean to sustain you as you hustle hard.
Westfield Chermside | Chermside
As it turns out, Westfield Chermside offers free wifi throughout the centre (up to 1GB or 180 minutes)! We like to settle in the sunshine in the green space outside of the new dining precinct, but if you need a bite to eat you wouldn’t be amiss setting up in Betty’s Burgers, Café 63 or The Bavarian for a study session fuelled with delicious eats. For coffee that will keep you going all day long, the Archer Specialty Coffee team would be delighted to keep you topped up!
Willow & Spoon | Wilston
If you need to be tempted out of bed and into work-mode, swing by Willow & Spoon in Wilston. This neighbourhood favourite is known for their exceptional coffee, sensational menu and good chat (a must-have as any procrastinator will attest to). Their courtyard dining space downstairs is shaded (perfect for avoiding glare on your laptop) and the main area upstairs has soft booth seats and plenty of people-watching opportunities. We like to order a house-made cold brew and something off the all-day brunch menu (how does the brioche French toast sound to you?) for ultimate brainpower.
Atticus Finch | Paddington
Our friend: “Want to go to Atticus Finch this week?” Us: “Hell yes!” This is a legit conversation we’ve had countless times because, as any inner-western suburb resident knows, Atticus Finch is a Brisbane icon that warms our hearts, fills our tummies, and keeps us going when a client has sent back their 9th round of revisions. Our recipe for the ultimate study sesh is as follows: $5 bottomless brew (or a beer, depending on the weather), a serve of their groovy black sticky rice with tapioca, and a cuddle with one of the many local doggos that frequent their patio. Bliss.
Nodo | Newstead
Getting out of bed sucks. Getting out of bed because you have to work is even worse… But, with a Nodo donut in hand and a delish shake to wash it down, we could be tempted. With plenty of healthy options on their menu (both sweet and savoury!), you can feel good knowing that you’re getting work done without blowing the diet. Their bright Newstead café is perfect to just focus and get work done, only interrupted by the occasional sweet treat delivered to your table…
Plum Tucker | Red Hill
Ah, Plum Tucker: the Red Hill Mecca for locals, freelancers and hungry students alike. With a glorious shaded courtyard as well as plenty of inside seating in their upstairs loft, Plum Tucker is a great spot to pop in your earphones, grab a bite to eat, and put your head into your work. If you have a lil’ tyke in tow, their little playroom means that you can both take a break and enjoy some playing when writer’s block hits.
James St | Fortitude Valley
PSA: James St has free wifi coverage! From Ann St down to Arthur St, and as far northeast as Chester St, this entire area is covered by Brisbane City Council wifi access. Whether you want to enjoy a coffee at Greenhaus, tuck into brekkie at King Arthur, or treat yourself to a wine or two at Cru Bar, there’s no shortage of options!
Brew | Brisbane CBD
Hidden down a CBD laneway, this café and wine bar is the perfect solution for all your work-from-home woes. There are plenty of tables, nooks and sofas to choose from, an epic menu if you get peckish, and a pretty good wine list for when you just can’t think anymore.
