It’s an international game that crosses oceans and hurdles borders, yet needs no translation. We’d like to personally introduce you to Australia’s first glimpse at the future of digital gaming – iPong. Yes, Brisbane is now home to a flashing neon gaming utopia, filled with infectious excitement, an electric ambiance and games galore. iPong is the new concept bar bringing you an exhilarating, digital twist to the age-old games of beer pong and darts, and we are infatuated. So, when the hour struck five, Styler Emily and I packed our bags and left work, determined to be some of the first Brisbanites to give it a shot.
We made our way over to MacGregor, led by blue skies and budding anticipation. As we walked through the towering black doors we arrived at what can only be described as a futuristic gaming world. Entering full sensory-overload, it took our eyes a few second to adjust, regain focus and hone in on the iPong tables in front of us. Three giant PongConnect™ tables were heroed in the centre of the room, each lined with a triangle arrangement of plastic cups. Before we knew it, our profiles were projected on the table below and the screens above, and the official game commenced. The table began flashing, directing each turn as we sunk the balls and began removing cups. The weight of the ball registered with each hit, so, sorry fellas – no cheating! Drawn to the game we picked up the ping pong balls, our rusty throws becoming more fluid with each shot. Laughter filled the venue as we ran around the room, collecting each stray throw. After we broke into a sweat, we headed over to the bar, ready to quench our thirst with the iPong Ale on tap that we had been eyeing up.
The night was young and there was still so much more to experience. The row of towering dart machines lining the far wall had caught our eyes, so we made our way over to the DartsLive2™ game, ready to up the stakes. As our first digital darts experience, we were surprised by the sheer speed of the plastic darts. Flying faster than we could say ‘watch your back!’, we turned to each other, jaws dropped. I may have forgotten to mention that we are both rather competitive Stylers, making for some stimulating challenges. Walking away with an epic defeat under my belt, Emily and I shook hands, keen to satisfy the hunger we had worked up. After ordering a famous balloon cocktail jug to share, we took a seat and got stuck into onion rings and popcorn chicken. With an extensive menu of both bar food and bevs to choose from, there was no chance we were leaving hungry.
This gaming nirvana is the late-night venue you’ve been needing in your life. If you’re after a more intimate pong experience, you can even hire the balcony function room, with a private PongConnect™ table, overlooking the entire venue. Digital beer pong and darts may sound like a futuristic, foreign concept, but it’s one of the most contagiously exciting experiences we’ve had in a long time. Welcome to Brisbane, iPong! We’re glad you’re here to stay.
