I Tried Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy For 5 Days: Here’s How I Felt

Oxygen: the new energy drink

By Bianca Licina | 8th October 2025

Running on empty, no matter how much sleep I got, had become my norm. Between work, workouts, and weekends out, my tank never truly refilled. That’s when I discovered Hyperbaric O2 Health in Bowen Hills — and a week of oxygen therapy that completely shifted my energy.

Call it burnout, exhaustion, or fatigue — in today’s never-stop world, it feels almost impossible to avoid. That’s been me. Juggling work, exercising regularly, socialising every weekend, and having a bloody good time while doing it. But when I finally stopped to check in with my body, I realised my tank never fully refilled. No matter how much sleep I got, the energy wasn’t quite there. So, when the chance came up to do a five-day trial at Hyperbaric O2 Health in Bowen Hills, I jumped at it.

So, what is Hyperbaric Oxygen/Hydrogen Therapy?

The clinic specialises in Hyperbaric Oxygen/ Hydrogen Therapy (HBOHT) — a pressurised chamber that allows your body to absorb around 40% more oxygen than usual. In simple terms, oxygen fuels about 90% of our energy, so boosting those levels can lead to big benefits: better immune function, faster recovery, improved sleep, sharper brain function, stronger lungs and heart, and more energy overall. Basically, it’s the superhero of the wellness world.

Commonly used by athletes for injury recovery, I was curious about what my experience would look like. As a healthy twenty-something with no physical injuries, I was curious: could HBOHT help with mental fatigue alone? I’m a sceptic when it comes to new treatments, but I went in with an open mind.

Founder Matt Baker — who used the therapy to recover from a serious car accident — has seen incredible results across the board, from his own traumatic brain injury to cerebral palsy and elite athletes. He told me to think of it like filling up a car’s petrol tank: the goal is to get blood oxygen levels back to “full” and keep them there.

Inside Hyperbaric O2 Health

The clinic itself is warm, calm, and welcoming. My 50-minute daily sessions felt almost futuristic, but I loved the peace and focus it gave me. Sitting inside, laptop out, it was the rare kind of time you can’t be interrupted — and knowing it was actively benefiting my health was a bonus.

Let’s talk results

What surprised me most was how quickly I noticed changes. On day one, I headed to my usual Monday night commitment — something I normally drag myself to — with actual excitement and energy. Tank full. Day two, I smashed through a tough cardio gym session with ease, even feeling noticeably less breathless during HIIT. Matt explained it as “150 trucks delivering oxygen to your lungs, instead of 50.” For the rest of that chaotic week, I kept waiting for my usual 3 PM crash. It never came. I could work harder, stay sharp, and still have the energy to enjoy my evenings.

It’s funny what you notice when you actually listen to your body. I’ve always considered myself healthy, but this five-day journey gave me a new appreciation for the importance of refuelling — even in unconventional ways.

So, whether you’re an injured athlete or a burnt-out professional, HBOHT at Hyperbaric O2 Health could be the reset you’ve been looking for. With a knowledgeable founder and supportive team, you feel right at home. By day five, I was striding in like I owned the place.
