There’s no denying the Gold Coast is truly the sun, surf and sand capital of Australia. While the Coast is a theme park lover’s paradise and boasts picturesque tropical scenery, the city is set to gain an outstanding cultural addition next year. By 2021, the largest art gallery outside of a capital city will be opening up right on the Gold Coast!
The giant $60.5 million art gallery is currently being built at Home of the Arts (HOTA) in Surfers Paradise. The six-level gallery will include a main exhibition space over 1000 square metres, three levels of permanent collections across 900 square metres, a gallery for the kids, plus an additional 1000 square metres to store pieces not currently displayed in the galleries. Construction for a new bridge across the Nerang River is set to start by the end of the year to ensure that the public can access the Arts Centre easier.
If admiring art isn’t up your alley, a ground-floor restaurant and rooftop bar will also be built in the HOTA gallery. This bar will be open to the general public and will provide guests with a whopping 270-degree view of the Coast! From the rooftop, you will be able to admire the Coast’s beautiful natural wonders and city lights – talk about the best of both worlds. Hansen Yuncken, who managed Hobart’s Museum of Old and New Art, is the design and construction mastermind behind the development. So, we trust the building design will be impeccable!
