While everyone dreams of having a magnificent living room full of velvet chairs, lush cushions, and one of a kind décor pieces, it can be hard to find an entire room worth of things you love, while still staying on budget. Resident Interior Stylist Morgan Braithwaite from Homemaker The Valley can help you create the luxurious space you’ve been longing for, but for a fraction of the price. We asked Morgan about the ‘Affordable Luxe’ trend, and how easily it can be incorporated into our own homes.

What are some of the easiest ways to update a living space?

One of the easiest ways is to source new accessories for your lounge. New scatter cushions and a throw can change the look of your lounge room instantly. I also suggest introducing new colours, textures and materials that reflect your style, new trends, or a change in season.

What’s a must-have decorative piece everyone should have in their lounge room?

A great feature planter pot and large sculptural indoor plant in the corner of a room can add interest and colour to your lounge. It’s also nice having a little from the outdoors to freshen up an indoor space. I also love including a table or floor lamp within a lounge room, as they are a great way to incorporate different materiality such as metals, glass and ceramics. They also bring sculptural and textural features to the room with the added benefit of ambient lighting of an evening.

Where are the best places to shop for luxe affordable homewares at Homemaker?

There are so many! My favourites include Adairs, Provincial Home Living and James Lane.
What should you splurge on and what items should you save on when it comes to redecorating a lounge room?
For the lounge room, I would splurge on a good quality and luxurious throw for your sofa, especially coming into the cooler months. A good quality throw in a beautiful fabric will last you many seasons and is something that will not only make your lounge look ready for winter and cosy, it will also be great for you to cosy up to on a winter evening.

If we only had $300 to update a living space, what would you suggest we spend it on?

I would spend a majority of your budget on a good quality, textural throw. I wouldn’t underestimate the value in a few feature scatter cushions to style your lounge either.

What is one piece of advice you’d give to someone looking to update their lounge room?

Don’t be afraid to use and mix colour – I love to pair strong, bold colours with classic and neutral tones. Small pops of colour through your scatter cushions or a new vase can make your space feel bright, but still liveable as the main bones of your space are kept simple and more classic.
