A Girl's Guide to Winning at the Races

A Girl's Guide to Winning at the Races

Round up your mane girls!

By Amber Lowther | 22nd September 2016

Round up your girlfriends and pick out your fascinator - it’s racing season! With Melbourne Cup on the horizon, there’s no better time to start planning than now! Seriously, right now. From how to place a bet to choosing your squad, we have everything you need to ensure a win at the races in every way possible!

Placing A Bet

If you’re not familiar with horse racing (or even betting, for that matter), playing it safe is your best bet (pun somewhat intended). There are different bets that you can place on a horse. To give you an idea, I’ve listed some simple terms and what they mean. You’ll be impressing everyone with your racing knowledge in no time! Just make sure you know what a horse is, at least.

Win: You win if your horse wins. How simple is that?!

Place: Backing a horse for a place means you win if your horse finishes in the top three.

Each Way: You win if your horse wins or runs a place.

Picking The Right Fascinator

When it comes to raceday dressing, a fascinator is one of those accessories you just can’t go past. If you’re all about the headwear, making sure you choose the right style and colour is crucial for Fashions on the Field: your fascinator has the power to make or break your outfit. Here’s how to pick a winning fascinator:

  • Make sure you have your outfit sorted first. That way, finding a fascinator to match a tone in your outfit will be much easier.
  • Avoid wearing a short dress with a large fascinator. The longer the dress, the more you can play with sizes!
  • When organising your fascinator, make sure you consider your hairstyle. You might find that having it up or sweeping it to one side will make the fascinator sit better.

Choose Your Squad Carefully

There’s nothing worse than when you’re having an absolute ball and your friends are complaining! If you select the right group of friends, your day will just be SO much more enjoyable. It’s the perfect girls’ day out and you may just learn a thing or two about horse racing. So get your outfit sorted, put on your dancing shoes and grab a form guide - it’s racing season, baby!

Embracing Colour Trends

When it comes to Melbourne Cup fashion, it’s all about colour, having fun and dressing boldly. You’ll always be safe wearing pastels and soft tones. Raceday dressing is also quite classy, so make sure you’re following the rules (yes, there are actual rules) and look for dresses that are at least knee-length.

Spring Racing Carnival doesn’t just mean Melbourne Cup; why not enjoy Derby Day and dress in monochrome colours? Opt for a sophisticated black dress or embrace the white-on-white trend.

Intend to Have Fun

While some may see the races as an opportunity to drink all day, you don’t really want to be the person who ends up on the 6pm news for all the wrong reasons, do you? Have a classy day out with your friends and enjoy the atmosphere! The races are a fantastic place to meet new people and do something different rather than your usual catch-ups with friends.

We encourage responsible gambling and responsible drinking.
