If you haven't heard of Galentine's Day, you need to get on it before February 13. We all have a friend who gets a bit grumpy around Valentine’s Day and wants to smite any loved-up couple in sight. Maybe you are that friend. And hey, that’s totally understandable; being single on Valentine’s Day can suck, even if you’re perfectly happy being single every other day of the year.
Solution: ignore Valentine’s Day and celebrate Galentine’s Day instead!
If you haven’t heard of Galentine’s Day, it’s probably because you haven’t watched TV’s Parks and Recreation. Leslie Knope (played by the glorious Amy Poehler) knows what’s up: every year on February 13, she and her gal pals ditch their husbands, partners and couches to spend time celebrating how much they love and appreciate each other.
What could be more perfect than that? Relationships can be fleeting and filled with weird little lies and half-truths and “How long do I wait before texting back?” Friends don’t have to worry about any of that; they’re there for you no matter what. Honestly, who needs romance when you have your best friends by your side?
Just like with Valentine’s Day, it’s up to you how you celebrate. But just because it’s about your gal pals and not your partner doesn’t mean that it has to get out of hand. You don’t need to invite every single female that you know, or go broke sending out an entire field of flowers.
We’re talking low-key love here: just hang out, dance to your favourite music, drink too much, party too hard, sing deeply emotional romantic ballads with your bestie, and eat anything and everything you want. Remember: your mates love you more than you love your diet-breaking self.
If you’re looking for something more than the usual chill sesh, why not try out one of these awesome options?
Be ladies who brunch
Brunch is the best meal of all the meals. No contest. And it can last for as long as you like. Host your brunch at home with appropriate Galentine’s Day materials or go out to your favourite restaurant for your food fix; it’s all about the company.
Make Galentine's Day Movie magic
Settle in for a rom-com marathon. If you’re single, you know it’s not that easy. If you’re in a relationship/married, you know it’s probably not that sweep-you-off-your-feet-with-a-surprise-flashmob romantic. But these movies are still fun and kinda cute, and perfect girls’ night material. Just remember that not all is fair in love and war and some of those things you’re swooning over are downright creepy without the romantic soundtrack.
Get Out On the Road
Pile into the car and go for a day trip to the beach, to the mountains, or wherever the road takes you. Blast a mish-mash of Taylor Swift and 90s tunes that make your heart happy and sing ’til your voice is hoarse.
Stay up all night
SLUMBER PARTY TIME! Grab your besties, your PJs and your junk food and combine this with your movie marathon for an awesome night with all your favourite things. This is the perfect chance for those karaoke ballads we talked about.
Have a good wine
Now, you could go the usual route with a delicious wine tasting at a proper venue because you’re just fancy that way. Or you could bring the wine tasting to you and make something that’s possibly even more awesome: wine pops.
Share the love around
Don’t leave all the work to one person! Get everyone cooking (or buying) a dish to share so that you can spend more time having fun and less time stressing in the kitchen.
DIY with a Crafternoon
So cute and sew fun! Want to learn to cross stitch, sew a simple skirt, try your hand at origami or beading? Whatever you want to do, do it with friends. Chances are they’ll be able to get you out of any serious mishaps and treat any wounds that come with the crafting life. (Origami paper cuts are the WORST.) You could even put your Galentine’s Day drinks to good use!
However you choose to celebrate, spread some of that Galentine’s Day cheer! Ovaries before brovaries, ladies.
