I’m sure we’ve all had the occasional giggle at a colleague for mispronouncing a word or snorted at our sibling tripping over something (AGAIN). But a comedy show is the only time it feels OK to laugh AT someone rather than WITH them.
While some comedians charge top dollar when they tour big-ticket venues in Brisbane, there are definitely ways to get your comedian-induced laughs for free. No, I’m not joking.
You can laugh yourself silly every night of the week in Brisbane if you know where to look. Start with the open mic comedy nights at these venues! Hey – it could even be a chance to see a future comedian get their start… or an up-and-comer completely tank.
MONDAY: Newmarket Hotel, Newmarket
Say goodbye to those Monday blues! Up-and-coming comedians will keep you entertained every Monday from 7.30pm while you chow down on the Newmarket Hotel’s Monday schooner deal for $23*. The deal includes a 300g Graziers Rump served with chips and salad, topped with your choice of Jim Beam Devil’s Cut wings or panko-crumbed calamari, PLUS a schooner of Yenda Hell.
TUESDAY: Boundary Hotel, West End
Looking for a cheap Tuesday event that doesn’t involve leftovers and TV re-runs? Boundary Hotel has you covered with their 2-for-1 dinner deals* on Tuesdays and free comedy nights organised by The Sit Down Comedy Club from 8pm.
WEDNESDAY: Pig’N’Whistle, Indooroopilly
While you probably associate Pig’N’Whistle with watching sport or chilling to live music in their beer gardens, the Indooroopilly venue will be offering free open mic comedy nights every Wednesday at 6.30pm from July 20 for a hump-day treat!
THURSDAY: Heya Bar, Fortitude Valley
Underground in the Valley, Heya Bar’s edgy, Pan-Asian street food style comes complete with low lighting, booth seating and not one, but four bars and now offers a weekly free open mic comedy night. The show starts at 7.30pm, with drinks and dinner available from 5pm. We strongly suggest trying their cheeseburger spring rolls!
FRIDAY: Brisbane Powerhouse, New Farm
Tough week? Get some cheap jokes and free laughs at Brisbane Powerhouse’s Knockoff comedy night on Fridays to start the weekend with a smile. Every Friday, local and Australian comedians take to the stage, as well as a special improvised comedy night on the last Friday of every month.
SATURDAY: Embassy Craft Beer Bar, Brisbane CBD
You can still have a relaxing, easy-going Saturday night without staying in. Embassy Bar now offers a free comedy night every Saturday from 8pm to 11pm with up-and-coming amateur comedians. The bar also serves up American-inspired comfort food and an extensive range of craft beers.
SUNDAY: Stones Corner Hotel, Stones Corner
Looking for a Sunday session with a difference? End your weekend on a high and laugh so hard you almost cry at Stones Corner Hotel’s comedy night organised by The Sit Down Comedy Club from 6.30pm. They even do a special comedy dinner deal with $15 burgers with a beer!
