When Comedy and Brisbane Meet

When Comedy and Brisbane Meet

Laugh your art off.

By Penelope Pelecas | 14th February 2017

This year, Brisbane will celebrate the eighth annual Brisbane Comedy Festival! Four weeks filled with laughter, laughter… oh, and laughter.

This will be the biggest festival yet, with more than 66 comedians performing at two major venues: the Brisbane Powerhouse and Brisbane City Hall.

With Valentine’s Day and the Brisbane Comedy Festival fast approaching, we caught up with comedians Matt Okine, Rhys Nicholson and Becky Lucas to hear their thoughts on love.

Matt Okine

Former Triple J host Matt Okine has won a number of awards, with the most recent being an ARIA for Best Comedy Release in 2015. This year, Matt will be touring with his sixth solo show, We Made You.

Q: What’s your current relationship status, and how does that make you feel?
A: I met my girlfriend two years ago when I was in town for the Brisbane Festival. It's awesome to have someone to travel with on tour, although we both like food and wine too much. But she's heaps funnier than me, so she's rarely impressed by anything I do.

Q: Tell us about the worst date you’ve ever been on.
A: A girl I was dating stayed over one night and then when I woke up, she'd stolen my moneybox. That was weird.

Q: What are your beliefs about marriage?
A: I feel like marriage is archaic. I feel like it implies ownership and control. I'm all for loving someone as long as you both shall live, but I don't need the government to know about it.

Q: Do you have any Tinder tales or Internet dating stories?
A: A girl I met online had told me that she wanted to fulfill a "stranger" roleplay on our first date. I didn't realise she was joking. And given I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting from QUT, I wasn't going to take the role lightly. Oh man, it was bad. First and last date.

Q: What are your relationship deal-breakers?
A: A girl I was seeing told me she didn't eat sushi. Game over.

Q: What advice would you give to girls out there looking to buy last-minute Valentine’s Day gifts?
A: A bottle of skin-contact white wine. Oh, baby. Not a day goes by where I don't dream about that stuff.

Rhys Nicholson

In 2016, Rhys Nicholson was a nominee for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Barry Award. This year, Rhys will be back with his own show, I’m Fine.

Q: What’s your current relationship status, and how does that make you feel?
A: I am engaged (illegally) to a man I’ve been with for six years. I was feeling pretty safe and happy about it until you asked and now I’m not sure. Jesus.

Q: Tell us about the worst date you’ve ever been on.
A: It depends on what you mean by date, I guess? I’ve had terrible things happen but I would call them more “liaisons”. I’ve been on one proper date in my life and that was with my fiancé. We went to a Vines concert. It was terrible. Then we went back to his place, I panicked and showed him clips of Jim Henson’s funeral on YouTube. I have no idea why either.

Q: What are your beliefs about marriage?
A: I believe it’d be nice to have the option.

Q: What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever said to a significant other/date?
A: All the weird things I’ve said to people in those situations are unprintable.

Q: Do you have any Tinder tales or Internet dating stories?
A: I am lucky that I completely missed dating apps. I met my partner at a party. I know, right? Crazy. I knew what his voice sounded like BEFORE I saw his junk.

Q: What are your relationship deal-breakers?
A: Being rude to people in the service industry. And open-toed shoes.

Q: What advice would you give to girls out there looking to buy last-minute Valentine’s Day gifts?
A: Don’t stress about it. Men are idiots. Go to a nice restaurant or show him a boob.

Becky Lucas

A writer for Emmy-nominated show Please Like Me, Becky Lucas is commanding attention as a strong and fresh voice on the comedy scene.

Q: What’s your current relationship status, and how does that make you feel?
A: I am currently single. On one hand, I don't want a relationship because I love to eat in bed and spend long afternoons inspecting ingrown hairs in the privacy of my own home. But on the other hand, I do really enjoy being in relationships and I think falling in love is the best feeling so I wouldn't mind locking one down if I can find some time between TV shows.

Q: Tell us about the worst date you’ve ever been on.
A: I once went on a date with a guy and it had been so long since I had been on one that I got really drunk way too early on. While he was telling me about his mum who had died, I had to run off to the bathroom and I vomited everywhere.

Q: What are your beliefs about marriage?
A: I don't really understand why when we fall in love with someone we then think, “Great, now let's tell the government.” I would like to keep the people who are in control of boring things away from my relationship, thank you very much.

Q: What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever said to a significant other/date?
A: I once told a date that I didn't think we should go on another date because he didn't smell right. Not bad. Just not... right.

Q: Do you have any Tinder tales or internet dating stories?
A: I went on Tinder once and I hated it so much. I wanted to leave with a good story, though, so I started talking to two guys and I asked them both for their phone numbers. Then when they gave them to me I sent them “mine”, but I really just gave them each other’s.

Q: What are your relationship deal breakers?
A: If they are rude to people who work in restaurants or taxi drivers. It really shows you who someone is when they're mean to people because they think they can get away with it.

Q: What advice would you give to girls out there looking to buy last-minute Valentine’s Day gifts?
A: Buy him a pass to the zoo because you'll always look hotter in comparison to a giraffe or baboon.
