I’ll admit it: I’m a sucker for love. If you’re looking for an expert on weddings, soppy movies, cheesy anniversary gifts or Valentine’s Day, I’m your girl!
But this year, as I waded through the Valentine’s Day-themed jobs piled on my desk and planned out my own celebrations, something struck me. What about all the other great loves in our lives?
Sure, a big bunch of red roses from your partner will put a smile on your face. But romance isn’t the only form of love that we experience, so it shouldn’t be the only one expressed, right?
Do you remember the first time you held your baby sister? That instant obsession? Or what about when you picked out your puppy at the RSPCA? The way your grandad can always turn your frown upside down; the unbreakable bond between two best friends – that’s all love.
It’s easy to get caught up in the flurry of romance around Valentine’s Day, but don’t forget about your other great loves, and the people who have helped make you who you are. Be the one who makes Valentine’s Day special for a bunch of people.
It doesn’t have to be anything big or fancy, and you don’t have to create a gift-giving extravaganza on par with Christmas. Just take the time to show that you care, and that you’re thinking about them.
Send your mum a letter, give your sister a call, take your grandma to lunch, give your best friend a rose - whatever you choose, never underestimate the power of affection. Not only is it smile-inducing, it reminds someone that they are truly loved. And really, what more could anyone ask for?
Take a minute this Valentine’s Day to celebrate every Valentine in your life. And when the last petal falls, pause to remember how lucky you are to be loved.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
