Brisbane’s Best Sunset Locations

The perfect way to end the day

By Hayley Hinze | 4th September 2020

It’s no secret that kicking back and watching a sunset is the single most relaxing way to end a day. We don’t want you to miss out, so wherever you are, we’ve got Brissy and beyond’s best sunset destinations. Cameras at the ready, here’s where to view some of the city’s best sunsets.

Mount Coot-tha

An absolute staple when it comes to Brisbane lookouts, Mount Coot-Tha boasts panoramic views from the airport, all the way around to the south side and the picturesque city scape in between. At 287 metres above sea level, watch Brisbane light up from your picnic rug, car or table at the Summit Restaurant.

Kangaroo Point Cliffs

Behold – everything you’ve ever wanted in a sunset destination. The Kangaroo Point Cliffs stretch along the river and provide immaculate views of the eastern face of the CBD. Watch CityCats cruise by as the sun sets behind the buildings, from up on the cliffs or down next to the water. This Brisbane gem features plenty of BBQ and picnic spots, so you’ll be set for the afternoon!

Wilson’s Outlook, New Farm

If you’re keen to watch the Story Bridge come alight, this is the spot for you! Sitting above the Howard Smith Wharves, this little park offers breathtaking views. Here, you’ll see the river wind around under the bridge, and through the buildings along Eagle Street Pier.

New Farm Park

It’s no surprise that New Farm Park provides a quality sunset viewing location – what can’t this place do? A riverside spot is nice, but do a 180-degree turn and you’ll find the main event. Here, Brisbane’s city scape is framed by the park’s trees which, when paired with the pastel sunset sky, creates the perfect sunset aesthetic.

Shorncliffe Pier

30 minutes north of the CBD lies the longest timber pier in Brisbane and the perfect addition to a sunset on the water. The pier stretches 350 metres and has views around to Brighton and Redcliffe. To make an afternoon of it, grab your SO (or your dog) for a stroll along the nearby ‘Lover’s Walk’ by the water.

Manly Boat Harbour

Check out the seaside town of Manly for a beautiful setting overlooking the masts. The jetty takes you right up to the harbour and is the perfect spot to watch the sunset over the bay. Grab some local fish and chips for a real nautical experience.

Nudgee Beach

For a waterfront sunset a mere 30 minutes from the CBD, hit up Nudgee Beach. The mangrove trees and stretch of sand during low tide makes this scene extra pretty, so no filters needed. The area is dog-friendly so bring your four-legged bestie too!

Bartley’s Hill, Albion

Hidden up in Albion, this lookout veers off Massey Street. Just when you think you’re lost, a bunch of trees make way to frame a perfect snapshot of the city. This is the perfect spot to drive by. Otherwise, pull over for a longer gaze or picture for the ‘gram as you soak up the views.

Wild Horse Lookout, Glasshouse Mountains

Overlooking the Glass House Mountains and the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, this spot has picture-perfect views from 123 metres above sea level. If you’re keen to earn your Instagram photo, head down the road to Mt Ngungun for a mountain climb (don’t stress, there’s no need to scale vertical rock faces here). Lookout or mountain climb – choose your own adventure.

Burleigh Hill, Gold Coast

The drive down to the Gold Coast is worth it for this dreamy destination. As the picnic capital of the GC, Burleigh Hill is known for its panoramic views of the coastline. The curve of the Burleigh Heads Cove sets you at a perfect vantage point to see pastel-coloured skies all the way down to the Spit. As dusk becomes dark, you’ll see the prominent Surfers Paradise skyline light up, hear the ambient sounds of crashing waves and feel the gentle sea breeze. Okay, now snap out of that trance – we’re not done yet!
