Sleep. It’s probably one of the elements of our wellbeing that we take for granted. With a 24-hour news cycle, increased connectivity through technology, combined with the general state of the world, it seems people are struggling more than ever to catch the right amount of zzz’s. It’s often easy to push through on the bare minimum however, it does beg the question, how productive can we be on so little? But enough doom and gloom! Feel

We humans are a tactile bunch, what and how we feel has a large impact on our disposition. Think of your bedroom as your sleep haven! Everything in there should look and feel calming, relaxing and put you in the right position for a good sleep. Hence, bedding is crucial! Good quality mattress protectors, sheets and pillows are the investments worth spending your money on. Thread count isn’t the be-all and end-all with bedding, opt for natural fibre sheets for a breathable bedspread, a mix of bamboo and cotton would be our go-to! Making sure your pillow is at its fluffiest potential is also key to a good snooze. TOP TIP: Feather pillows come up like brand new if you air them out on a warm day!

Weighted blankets are also high up on the list to help soothe and relax your mind and body ready for a night of sound sleep. They’re great for reducing anxiety, plus no slipping off the bed. Making sure your body feels relaxed and your muscles are free from tension is also an important factor to help you drift off. Some of our stylers enjoy a magnesium bath to soak away the tension, or even a warm shower before bed can work wonders! Finally, if you’re a pyjama-wearing kind of gal, opt for quality fabrics that are cosy and non-irritating. This cashmere set from Jasmine and Will is a winter winner!

Hear

A lot of sleep troubles can originate from sound. Whether it’s blocking it out or introducing it, this sense can play a key role in getting you to sleep. There is a tonne of (free!) sleep assisting apps out there that our stylers highly recommend. Calm, Relax Melodies, and the Rain Rain app are some of our top picks to try! You can also opt for a good ole traditional sound machine to play white noise, rainforest or ocean sounds. Whatever floats your boat! However, if you need dead silence to fall asleep, these wireless, noise-cancelling headphones are a fab investment. Just ensure you opt for a light or vibrating alarm!

Taste

Now this one isn’t really about engaging your tastebuds, but there are plenty of ingestibles you can take to get you into a healthy sleep pattern, whether it be in dropper or tablet form. Keep an eye out for ingredients such as melatonin, magnesium, lavender, and passionflower for natural sleep aids. Of course, if you do want something that tastes good as well as helps you sleep, there are plenty of great herbal teas to assist you. What better way to end the day than relaxing with a hot cuppa to soothe you into some forty winks? We love this naturopath approved sleep infusion from Tropeaka, featuring a blissful blend of chamomile, lemon balm and rose petals.

Smell

Your sense of smell can also play a huge role in how relaxed and ready for bed you are. Scents such as lavender, vanilla, valerian and jasmine are particularly well known for their ability to send you off to dreamland, so keep an eye out for these when shopping for your na-night products. Engage your sense of smell at the start of your night time routine, with a gorgeous air diffuser or aromatherapy candle. You can set these going while you take a hot shower with one these sweet-smelling shower bombs from Lush Cosmetics! All the benefits of a bath bomb but for the shower, this guy makes the perfect addition to a serene, self-care routine as the lavender-filled foam dissolves in the shower.

You can finish off your bedtime ritual with a spritz of your fave pillow spray and then a roll of a calming essential oil on the soles of your feet and the back of your neck. This sleep blend from The Cle Collective is perfect for encouraging deep sleep. The sandalwood oil it contains is known for increasing non-REM sleep, while the amethyst stones it is infused with brings healing energy to your bed.

See

The last of the five senses, sight also has to be considered when addressing your sleep concerns. If a sneaky bit of light is keeping you from nodding off, an eye mask could be a sweet saviour. A silk eye mask is soft on the skin and contours well to the face, blocking out that pesky light. Using an eye pillow is also a great addition to your nighttime routine, or anytime that you’re suffering from stress, tension or headaches. These small wheat bags that are infused with essential oils are fab for relieving the aforementioned problems. Breathe in the scent of lavender and chamomile as the pillow engages acupressure points to relax the delicate muscles around your eyes. Talk about zen!

Finally, our last top tip for the sight sense is, get yourself a pair of blue light glasses! Take it from a group of gals that work in front of screens all day (can you relate?), blue light can cause serious problems in the way of eye strain and headaches. Using blue light technology like your phone or laptop before bed can significantly hinder your production of sleep-inducing melatonin. Basically, the blue light tricks your body into thinking it’s daytime, making you less inclined to wind down. Wearing blue light blocking glasses can significantly help address this, leading to a restful sleep all night long!
