Like trivia? Like food? Like The Fox Hotel? Like winning COLD HARD CASH? Of course you do. And The Fox wants to hear from you. To celebrate their 100th Trivia With Taste show they are running an eight-week trivia championship to uncover Brisbane's best trivia team and the winner over the 8 weeks, gets $1000! They are also giving each nightly winner a double chance to win $1000.
The Fox's Trivia with Taste trivia concept started about two years ago, when Quiz Meister Steffan Van Lint was invited to the half-renovated venue to redefine how trivia nights could be run in Brisbane. They wanted to have a regular food-focussed trivia event. But Steffan wanted to go bigger... much bigger than that. The result is one of Brisbane’s biggest, and most eccentric, weekly trivia nights, with many questions focused on all things food, including gourmet knowledge and mystery taste tests. But non foodies, fear not! There are also plenty of pop-culture questions for all those who aren't at one with their taste buds.
Now Steffan, a Ned Kelly lookalike in skinny jeans (and an even skinnier tie) is ready to hunt down Brisbane's best trivia team and give them money. Lots of money. Well, $1000, which we think is lots of money.
“The guys at The Fox have been great,” says Steffan. “They gave me a creative license to do pretty much whatever I want.” And Steffan is exactly the type of guy you want to give an open creative license to. Twelve years ago he co-founded Quiz Meisters, an innovative trivia company that not only introduced onscreen questions to the trivia industry, but sparked an irreverent style of comedy-infused quizzing that has since lent itself to shows like Spicks and Specks and Know Your Generation.
“We were just a bunch of fresh-out-of-uni creatives that saw a way of using our combined skills to add something unique to an otherwise tired industry. At first it was an just an idea to fund our filmmaking pursuits and employ our friends, but before we knew it, we were producing a TV show, running inter-pub year long championships, putting on comedy festival shows and designing product launches for clothing brands Hurley and Wrangler,” Steffan explains. “There was a lot of creation coming out of Fitzroy and Collingwood [where they started and where their headquarters still remains] at that time. Before we knew it we were getting labelled ‘bloody hipsters’, but as the hipster trend spread, so did our demand around the country.”
Which is how Steffan ended up in Brisbane. “I really like Brisbane. It’s been changing rapidly which makes it an exciting city to live and work in. It’s got the same energy as Fitzroy did twelve years ago, which is one of the reasons I went back to hosting a show here. There is a fresh celebration of left-field thinking, which makes the shows fun to host as they are so well received”.
“Last week we played Sniff The Bartender, where punters had to guess what essential oils Eduardo [the Italian bartender] was wearing on his neck. We have opera singers singing pop songs and crappy actors reenacting movie scenes for punters to guess. The night becomes a fusion of silly games, good tunes, ridiculous onscreen questions and our ever popular tasting challenges. It’s not quite what most people turn up expecting”.
