8 Reasons Why Break-ups Are A Good Thing

Single and fabulous!

By Amber Lowther | 21st July 2016

Ah, break-ups. Even the thought of one still gives me heart palpitations. It’s definitely not a nice thing to go thorough - you have to separate yourself from a person that you’ve been attached to in every way. But, you see, life lessons are worth the pain. I know it may not seem like it now but TRUST ME. There are so many reasons why break-ups are a good thing. Still don’t believe me? Keep on reading!

You learn a lot about yourself

If you told me I’d learn more about myself after a break-up, I would’ve laughed in your face and gone back to crying. Time really does heal all wounds. Sooner or later, you’ll be looking back at all you’ve accomplished and realising you know so much more now than you did before. It’s naïve to think you know everything when there’s so much you have yet to learn. Listen to yourself and you’ll come around happier than ever.

They’re making way for someone better suited for you

If someone is silly enough to let you go without a second thought, stuff ’em! They’re actually letting someone better make a beeline to your honey pot (OK, that metaphor took a weird turn but you know what I’m saying). Break-ups are difficult and upsetting but they’re totally worth it when you realise someone who appreciates you could be right around the corner.

Why Break Ups Are A Good Thing

You can be selfish

This is something I’ve been doing unapologetically. Do you know how amazing it feels to do whatever you want, WHENever you want?! To not have to ask someone whether they also feel like ordering Chinese food or being considerate about TV time when you really just want to binge-watch Outlander? Better yet, you can focus on yourself and your career.

My career is #1 on my list of priorities and it feels damn amazing to know I can put all of my energy into that rather than worrying about what someone else is doing. Do this as much as you can while you’re single because it will pay off in the end.

You realise just how big the world is

Your previous relationship might have kept you from doing all the things you’ve dreamed of, such as moving to New York, volunteering in Cambodia or simply taking a year to travel the world. You can take a giant leap out of your comfort zone and throw yourself into something new. With billions of people in the world, your former significant other will fall by the wayside. They’re not worth it anyway!

You become stronger

Kanye had a point when he rapped “that don’t kill me, can only make me stronger” and rightly so! (What? He was the first person to ever say that, right?) Getting your heart broken is one of the worst feelings in the entire world, I won’t lie. I guarantee in time you’ll think “How the heck did I get through that?” And it’s because you’re Wonder Woman x 1000000 and this experience has only made you stronger!

You realise what you do and don’t want

After a while, you’ll start to realise that you actually don’t want some of the things you thought you needed. You can take the time to try out new things, date new people and figure out what you’re looking for exactly. It’s OK not to have it all figured out quickly! Each experience will bring you closer to knowing what’s best for you.

Why Break Ups Are A Good Thing

You can spend more time forming deeper relationships with your friends and family

Being wrapped up in a relationship can often cause friends to drift apart and can restrict the time you spend with your family. If that happened to you, now you can spend all the time in the world (between work and other stuff, of course) forming deeper connections and spending more quality time with those who will never leave your side!

You learn independence

You don’t need a partner to make you happy! Hell to the no! Learning to love yourself is the first step to living that fabulous independent life. You have FREEDOM to be you in any way, shape or form so embrace it!
