8 Aussie Comedians You Need to Follow on Instagram

8 Aussie Comedians You Need to Follow on Instagram

No, seriously.

By Amber Lowther | 20th May 2016

A few years ago, I seriously considered getting into stand-up comedy. Why, you ask? Because I’m hilarious - obviously. After much deliberation, I decided that I’d channel my wit into writing and various other forms of media. And, to be honest, I was not keen on picturing the audience naked to overcome stage fright.

Mostly, I realised that (hilarious as I am) I’m nowhere near as funny as the Aussie comedians in this list. So get double-tapping and prepare yourself for endless LOLs, ROFLs and laughing emojis!

Dave Hughes

Stick a fork in me, I’m done! Hughesy is probably one of the funniest guys in the whole of Straya. When he’s not leaving you in fits of laughter, he’s co-hosting the KIIS FM drive show Hughesy & Kate, dropping in to The Footy Show and taking on presenting duties for Australia’s Got Talent. Known for being “a typical Aussie bloke”, Hughesy will brighten your Insta - you won’t regret hitting the ‘follow’ button!

Celeste Barber

If you want to laugh so hard you spit out your tall skinny latte with caramel drizzle, do yourself a favour and follow Celeste Barber on Insta! Known for her imitations of celebrity social media photos, she’s an absolute crack-up! With more than 780,000 followers, you could say she’s not doing too bad on the ’gram. From imitating the Kardashians to Australia’s own Miranda Kerr, there’s absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t be following Celeste!

Alex Williamson

I saw one of Alex’s shows at The Tivoli a couple of years ago and my stomach actually hurt from laughing so much. Known as the “loosest Aussie bloke”, Alex’s crude humour and sick jokes are loved by more than 500,000 YouTube subscribers and 400,000 Instagram followers. While you probably wouldn’t take your mother-in-law to one of his shows, there’s no doubt sitting in the audience is a damn good time! Plus, his Brissie show is on Netflix, so you could say he’s kind of a big deal.

Julia Morris

Ah Julia, Australia’s First Lady of Comedy. There’s nothing better than seeing someone laugh at themselves, and her Instagram is a mixture of her looking glamorous in beautiful dresses and hilarious no-BS selfies. When she’s not kicking butt on House Husbands or hosting I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! and hanging out with Dr Chris Brown *cries hysterically*, she’s making people’s faces hurt at her comedy shows. In a good way.

Ash Williams

One of my personal faves, you’ll probably recognise Ash from getting his rig out on Instagram, appearances on Studio 10 and as the host for @7tennis’ coverage of the Australian Open. He may or may not have been trying to get to the bottom of the Players Café missing ice-creams scandal – serious stuff. Ash also has his own Instagram show, Ash Williams Live, where he’s joined by a special guest each time - Hamish Blake, Sam Frost and that “professional model” guy from last year’s Bachelorette to name a few. This Aussie comedian's feed is a mix of promos for his upcoming shows (let’s do a Brissie one, yeah?) and hilariously captioned photos. You need to give him a follow and swoon over his man-bun ASAP.

Tommy Little

This guy! You’ll spot him on The Project from time to time, making you LOL as you eat your dinner in your Batman robe (or maybe that’s just me?). He recently brought his new show (which I cannot name because #profanities - it rhymes with “tickhead”) to BrisVegas and I am forever devastated that I missed it. He left his brekky show with Meshel Laurie on Nova 100 at the end of last year but thankfully he’s still popping up on the comedic circuit! Also, he has his own line of mugs for those bada$$e$ who “want to get rich or chai trying”.

Hamish Blake

When it comes to Hamish Blake, I can’t even deal. I’ve actually lost count of the times I’ve cried from laughing at his antics. His Insta is a collection of hilarious videos from Hamish & Andy* adventures, pictures of his babin’ and hilarious wife (also my writing inspiration – love ya, Zoe!) and their son (Sonny), who is the cutest baby in the history of cute babies. Even if he does sometimes look like a croissant.

*Honourable mention to Andy Lee who is equally as amazing even if he doesn’t have an Insta account. Yet.

Chris Lilley

An iconic Aussie comedian in his own right, Chris Lilley is the genius creator behind TV shows Summer Heights High, Ja’Mie: Private School Girl, Angry Boys, We Can He Heroes and Jonah From Tonga, aka the most quotable shows in Aus history! His Insta is full of fan photos, snippets from his hit shows, memes and some photos of life away from his famous characters. I’m forever waiting for the next show. There needs to be more! Did you hear that, Chris?

Rove McManus

I remember staying up to watch Rove Live after The OC and loving every bit of it! He’s won the Gold Logie three times, so he’s naturally an absolute legend. Although his show sadly ended in 2009, you can now listen to him in his new brekky radio gig on 2DayFM (Rove & Sam) with former Bachelorette Sam Frost. Rove’s Insta is a conglomeration of celebrity selfies, show-related photos and funny bits to brighten your commute. Say hi to your mum for us, Rove!
