Beautiful images matter! There are no truer words than these when it comes to likes, follows and regrams on Instagram. And there's nothing more beloved on the popular photography app right now than a perfectly executed flat lay.

Whether it’s an arrangement of beauty products, books, fashion items, food or the random contents of your bag, with the right tricks behind your flat lay approach, you might have social media gold on your hands.

One of the accounts leading charge when it comes to this trend on Instagram belongs to Australian boutique brand The Daily Edited. We picked the brain of co-director Alyce Tran and came up with seven flat lay tips that will seriously up your Instagram game.

How To Improve Your Flat Lay Skills

  1. Find an empty space near a window so you can have access to natural light.
  2. Bring consistency to your pictures by touching them up via apps such as VSCO and Snapseed.
  3. Always keep your eye open for props that might work with your products.
  4. Try to make sure everything matches tonally or is in theme.
  5. Don't put pressure on yourself to get flat lays done at cafés and restaurants. It’s really hard to do and your friends just want to drink their coffee.  If you do feel the need, don't go during peak hours as then you can rearrange the table and add your props without intruding too much on other patrons.
  6. Mix it up with some close up flat lays and ones that are from higher up with more going on in them.
  7. Mix it up in your grid on Instagram so that you don't have two same-same looking images next to each other.

Alyce says The Daily Edited started using flat lays as a cheap and easy way to present their product to potential customers on Instagram.

“We found that people just responded to them really well and then I just kept going with it. It’s really not a lot of effort and it’s fun!”

She says flat lays are now the most common way of introducing a lot of their new styles and colours to their current followers.

“I can sell a product now purely by posting a picture of it on Instagram.”

You don’t have to have an uber-successful brand or equipment behind you to achieve the perfect flat lay. Alyce says the flat lays shown on their Instagram account are actually all shot on her iPhone 6 Plus.

Alyce says it all comes pretty instinctively to her, like styling an outfit or anything else. Some take her literally a minute to arrange, while she overthinks others or works with a lot of components and needs up to 15 minutes.

Alyce’s favourite item to use in a flat lay is flowers, as they add freshness and can work with your colour palette. She suggests people add their own style to their flat lays and own it!

“I strongly recommend having a giant white sheet of cardboard for your Instagram posts, and it’s best to shoot in natural light,” she says.

So where does Alyce look for flat lay inspiration? She reads all the local and overseas lifestyle and fashion magazines, as she believes these people are always pushing the boundaries in terms of still life. Alyce also follows a range of interesting users on Instagram.

“I love Instagram, so I follow a range of celebrities (I like to see where they’re going and what they’re wearing to catch up on what’s cool). I love accounts such as TrendLand and The Cool Hunter because they show me the latest in lifestyle trends. And I seriously love looking at all those baking accounts! I think the way bakers present their goodies is always so creative!”
