5 Ways to Stay Cool This Summer

5 Ways to Stay Cool This Summer

Welcome to paradise, Brisbanites!

By Sophie Catsoulis | 21st December 2016

Summer. It’s all coconuts and palm trees, right? Wrong. Welcome to Brisbane, a city that swelters all summer long. It’s seemingly impossible to stay cool here. If you ask me, Queensland should be dethroned as the Sunshine State to make way for its new title: the Boiling-Hot-Breezeless-Pit-of-Doom State.

OK, maybe that’s a little harsh, but when your air-con decides to go into hibernation right when the temperatures start to rise (as mine recently has), Brisbane can feel like the surface of the sun.

But get your head out of the freezer door and get ready to be refreshed for real. Here’s how to beat the heat and stay this summer:

1. Invest in a shell pool

But those are just for kids, right? Nuh-uh! Shell pools are awesome – believe me. Who needs a full-size swimming hole when you can relax in the comfort of your very own shell? You might have to fight the dog for it, but a shell pool is the perfect antidote to the lack-of-pool blues. It’s easy, it’s cheap and best of all, it’s cool!

2. Wash the car

Now, we all love a bit of Jessica Simpson car-wash action. But there are some real benefits to giving the car a scrub. Not only will you finally be able to see through the windscreen clearly, a hose is really all you need for a fun and refreshing way to spend a summer’s day!

3. Go to the cinema

Besides the obvious allure of popcorn and Maltesers, the movies are air-conditioned! “Yeah, duh,” you might say. But while many of you were whinging about the recent heatwave, I was lapping it up in the air-con, snacks in hand.

4. Buy a pedestal fan (or three)

I’ll admit, I thought this was an antiquated invention. But that was before I discovered the miracle that is the fan (post air-con failure). These babies are no joke. I owe my life to my pedestal fan.

5. Hit the shops

You know those benches in the middle of the shopping centre? Yes, the ones the old ladies sit on. It’s time you made use of them. OK, let me finish. If you are sick of the heat at home, take a trip to the nearest shopping centre and score yourself a seat. Again, it’s air-conditioned and you won’t believe how great you’ll feel after a few minutes cooling down. And did I mention people-watching is fun? Thanks, Grandpa!

Stop sweating and start soaking up the sun – in small doses, of course!
