We’re all guilty of spending a little too much time on Instagram. Whether you’re following bloggers or fitness inspiration accounts, there is something that works for these people that bring followers and likes in the masses. Have you ever wanted to build your following and want to know all of the ins and outs to Instagramming like a pro? Read on further for my tips and tricks that will have people double tapping.
Particularly popular with bloggers, the flatlay never goes astray. This is the best option to show off your favourite things, whether they're magazines, jewellery, clothes or beauty products. Flatlays are best taken on a basic background. You will often see bloggers placing their objects on a white background, which will be taken from a birds-eye-view. A white background makes the objects standout and makes the photograph appear more professional. Having a theme is the best way to take a successful flatlay. If you’re taking photos of beauty products, make sure you don’t add a random bowl of muesli. Alternatively, colour themes also work wonderfully. There’s nothing prettier than seeing multiple objects the same colour in a flat lay. Pick no more than three colours, and mix with neutrals if required to complete the look.
Filters & Lighting
Filters are a saving grace and help make the object of your photo stand out by adding contrast, brightening, and an airbrushed overlay to your images. Lighting is also a big plus. Try to take images during the day with natural light. You will be surprised how much this will help. Working with natural light is as simple as opening a window! Instagram also has editing options, which allows you to brighten, add highlights and reduce shadows to your photo. This is perfect if your image didn’t work out the way you wanted it to. If you look at a lot of popular Instagram accounts, you will find that they use the same filter across their feed. This adds an aesthetic and theme to your account and shows a consecutive thread when people are scrolling through.
Captions and Hashtags
These little additions can add a lot to your Instagram. Captioning is great as it helps your followers learn a bit about you instead of filling your caption box with emojis (which are fun, I’m not going to lie). Make it personal, make it funny, make it relevant. It helps your followers get to know you, connect with you and vice versa. It’s always great to initiate contact by asking a question to help conversation generation and flow. Hashtags are the best way to help users find your account. It can be as simple as taking a photo of your outfit and posting #OOTD (Outfit Of The Day). It’s always great to research popular hashtags to ensure you have the best chances of growing your Instagram! #selfie.
Keep It Simple
When it comes down to it, Instagram is meant to be a fun application to use to share imagery and videos. Don’t take it too seriously and make sure you enjoy yourself. You don’t have to be a professional photographer to post great images and you certainly don’t have to be a celebrity to gain followers. Respect others, engage in conversation, follow your friends and hashtag to your hearts content.
