The Interior Trends Taking Over This Year (And Exactly How To Style Them)

it's the inside that counts

By Victoria Lewis | 10th April 2026

The turning of the leaves does not just mean that another season is on the horizon, but also that it’s about time for us to retreat indoors and embark on a seasonal reset of the space (and the soul).

This year, interiors are layered, meaningful, and filled with a personal touch. Turning to warmer tones, interior design has leaned into nostalgia to create cohesive yet character-filled spaces full of playful statement pieces. On one hand, bold, mid-century-inspired aesthetics are taking the reins, while on the other, softer, more sculptural forms are the focus.

If your space is lacking some inspiration, not to fear, catering to all manner of tastes, the interior trends taking over in 2026 are surprisingly easy to style for yourself.

So get cosy, grab a cuppa, and scroll through a curated list of 2026’s top interior design trends, and exactly how to recreate them in your home.

1. Mid-century chic

Having quite possibly the largest influence on furniture this year, mid-century aesthetics are having a major moment. Stooped in nostalgia, this trend is all about personality, elegance, and blending the old with the new. A true revival of the playful minimalism of the ’60s and ’70s, the trend can be summed up by clean lines, seamless indoor-outdoor living, contrasting timber and upholstery, and a touch of fun – designed to be layered with meaning, and age oh-so-gracefully.

Styling Tip: Bring these vintage vibes into the modern day by pairing eccentric antique pieces with others that embody more refined design – equal parts playful and considered. Let one piece have its main character moment and centre the room around it, like this dreamy RJ Living bed frame. Pieces like this one draw the eye, leaving room for largely bare walls and fixtures – still statement-making without being overwhelming (a big no-no for mid-century chic).

2. Earthy edge

Let the relaxed Australian lifestyle seep into the way you furnish your home. This year, interiors are becoming more natural – they are more earthy in tone, raw in texture, and grounded by a timeless sensibility. When it comes to styling, texture takes centre stage; shaggy rugs mimic moss, treated timber is stripped back with a raw edge, and abstract shapes imitate tree trunks. It’s less about perfection and more about lived-in character, which RJ Living’s Roam collection embodies so beautifully.

Styling Tip: First things first, outdoor furniture is well worth investing in. Truly embracing nature, let your outdoor setting feel seamless with your surroundings. Go for a set-up that makes the most of natural timber, or find something that draws the eye with texture and tone. For a subtle spruce up, bring the greenery indoors with a potted fiddleleaf or bamboo that lets the room breathe.

3. Curves (in all the right places)

Mimicking the architecture of Renaissance archways, curved forms are turning up everywhere in 21st-century homes. Characterised by unexpected sculptural forms that evoke a sense of calm, stability, and connectedness, it’s a trend that’s been around for a while, but we will be the first to say, it’s really here to stay.

Styling tip: The easiest way to bring rounded forms into your space is through decor and smaller furnishings – sculpted vases, a circular rug, an oval mirror – but to take the look to the next level, go for larger pieces like dining room tables, sideboards, and even armchairs that utilise a subtle curve.

4. Pattern play

In true maximalist fashion, pattern play is all the rage this year. Spanning from mismatched cushions to unique timber finishes (we are currently infatuated with this chessboard-esque side table from RJ Living), the key is about choosing a ‘hero’ pattern and going from there. Take this RJ Living print, for example, as your ‘hero’ – find a colour to draw out and use in the secondary pattern. In this case, the subtle geometry of the timber sideboard complements the brown of the print.

Styling tip: This one isn’t as scary as it may seem (we promise). This trend can be as easy as switching out your block-coloured throw cushions for a stripe, and pairing with a checked throw on the couch. And, as you’ve read above, wall art is another fantastic jumping-off point to play with pattern, and one that can instantly transform a space.

5. Moody moments

In the spirit of creating a cosy retreat within your own home, why not opt for a moodier colour palette this year? Far from the strictly all-beige look popularised in the late 2010s, don’t be afraid to go for deeper, more sultry tones. Taking a page from Pinterest’s 2026 colour palette, deep plums and chocolate browns are being seen everywhere, from shaggy carpets to cosy armchairs.

Styling Tip: This trend is about creating a feeling of warmth and connection, and it’s all done with colour. When it comes to timber, go for deep oak or even black tones, like this RJ Living coffee table – just light a candle, and there you have it,  an instant way to set the mood.

Wasn’t that fun? If you’re currently experiencing a fresh wave of home inspiration, check out RJ Living’s new Roam collection online or in-showroom at one of their stunning locations (trust us, these pieces are even nicer in the flesh).
