My partner and I ditched the so-called dream that most millennials are chasing — owning a house in the ’burbs. Instead, we chose to invest in a small but chic two-bed apartment in inner-city Brisbane. It felt much more us. We wanted to live in an urban area with enough happening around us, and being by the river was important — it gives the city energy without the chaos. Think exposed concrete ceilings, white walls, oak timber floors, black and stainless steel accents throughout — fresh, bright, and ultra modern.
When it came to furnishing it, I knew exactly what I didn’t want. Nothing too overdone, nothing trend-driven that would feel dated within three to six months. No curves, no boucle, no Pinterest-core pieces that start showing up on every second Instagram ad. Mealtimes outdoors in Queensland are essential. Even a small space outside to sit and relax is vital, so we wanted a dining set that felt minimal and durable for our balcony. It’s fully weatherproof and surprisingly comfy — perfect for warm nights, weekend lounging, or pretending we’re in Barcelona. Made from cement, it’s sturdy enough for a drink, candle, or pot plant — and the compact size means it fits into tighter corners without feeling clunky. For something a little more elevated, we added the Macarella Cement Side Table. Sculptural and textural with a curved form, it adds instant depth to the space. I’ve styled it with a stack of books and a ceramic bowl — it’s basically the Pinterest side table of my dreams.

A good throw goes a long way, especially during the cooler months when you still want to lounge outside. The Dakie Double-Sided Blanket is a go-with-everything kind of piece. With a soft wool-blend in tonal beige and grey, it’s draped over the sofa for an extra layer of comfort (and aesthetic value). And the easiest way to upgrade any surface? Trays.
