Summer in motion

Fresh from hosting President Obama, Marriott Hotel is now dishing up for the silly season.

In case you missed it, the Brisbane Marriott was recently in the spotlight amidst the G20 madness last weekend as the hotel of choice for team USA and President Barack Obama.

As you can imagine, preparation in the lead up reached new heights with nothing left to chance to ensure the rooms, staff and service were all first rate.

And lucky for us, Brisbane is the long-term beneficiary. One of the items to get a presidential tweak is the new summer menu at Brisbane Marriott’s signature restaurant, Motion Bar & Grill.

I headed in to try their new menu, which features an array of a la carte, share and seasonal set menu offerings.

We bypassed their infamous Seafood Tower, but it’s made a reprise and is sure to be one of the most ordered dishes - scallops, bugs, prawns, smoked salmon, mussels, oysters, crab legs and calamari, plus a bowl of chips and dipping sauces for just $109 for two people.

For entrée, my guest and I shared seared half shell scallops with a celeriac puree, micro herb and truffle oil. Light and flavoursome, the only issue was that we could have eaten a bowl of them!

For mains, we shared lemon and thyme chicken breast with carrot, parsnip puree, green pea and pan juices alongside crispy skin barramundi with grilled chilli and garlic buttered prawns, spring onions and heirloom tomato.

The chicken was deliciously tender with plenty of flavour putting up a solid fight against the barramundi. But, barramundi is hard to beat, and the accompanying garlic buttered prawns sealed the deal.

And although I’m often a savoury over sweet girl, the piece de resistance was, in fact, the dessert.

Sticky date pudding – provided it’s done well – is a no brainer. This one was light and fluffy with lashings of butterscotch. The salted caramel chocolate melting moment? Incredible. As my colleagues can attest, salted caramel is my Achilles heel, and this divine creation with local salted caramel and ‘Lick’ ice cream sandwiched between two perfectly crumbly dark chocolate biscuits really took the cake - so to speak.

And if Obama ordered room service late at night after a day of political chit-chat while he was here, I could just imagine the President satisfying his sweet tooth with one of these.

With summer fast approaching (yep, it’s not actually here yet) there are plenty of festive treats on offer too, with a Christmas menu and pre-Christmas package menu, and a Party on the Deck BBQ, which for $49 per person includes a selection of grilled meats and mushrooms, salads and bread rolls and pavlovas on the M Deck overlooking the Brisbane River.

The bar hopes to feature live music on the M Deck throughout summer as well – perfect for a Friday night knock off as you soak up the balmy nights with a couple of vinos.
