When lawyer David Dowd would take his family out for breakfast and lunch, he often found ‘healthy’ wasn’t on the menu.
“Every time we went out, it was croissants and milkshakes, and I’d usually get some really badly done bircher muesli, and I kept thinking, ‘this is crazy!” he says.
“There wasn’t anywhere I could go – especially in a chain-type business where I knew I was going to get consistently good, guilt-free food every time.”
After a trip to New York and seeing first hand how they do it in the big apple, he brought home his research and decided to apply it in Brisbane.
“Twelve months later I opened the first store at Mt Gravatt and decided to make it 24 hours and see what happened and it’s become a bit of a mecca. What do they say…’necessity is the mother of all invention’,” he says.
And that was mere months ago. Liquefy Juice Co now has four stores, with James Street the latest store to open and plans to have ten outlets in total just in Brisbane, Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.
The basis of the business is simple; convenient, fresh, healthy food made using mostly organic produce. Liquefy is a mecca of health foods, with a menu that includes bottled cold-pressed organic juice, salads, smoothies, raw slices and bliss balls, Acai bowls, coffee and more. The business produces its own almond mylk, and cold-presses its juices in the Mt Gravatt store.
The menu is extensive, but David says it’s clear some customers already have their faves.
“People love the daily detox juice, the chocolate buttercup smoothies – which is this tasty mix of banana, house-made almond butter and peanut butter – and our raw salted caramel slice. People have become fanatical about them!” he says.
“Seriously, they come in and buy them by the tray-load.”
As for the future, he also has plans to open in Melbourne and Sydney, and add a beauty arm to the business, making Liquefy a holistic lifestyle offering.
“There’s a large segment of the community who are literally now structuring their lives around their wellbeing. Liquefy is really part of facilitating that process.”
