I have recently discovered, much to my displeasure, that I am gluten intolerant. Now this is a travesty for the wheat lover I am. After two weeks of refusing to come to terms with the news, much to my boyfriend’s sufferance, I decided I couldn’t go on. While I can cook up a semi-edible gluten free meal at home, I had an issue finding restaurants and cafes that could cater for my six-foot-four carb guzzling boyfriend and my gluten-free self. So I hit the streets of Brisbane and found the best gluten-free cafés and restaurants ANYONE can enjoy!
This place is literally where gluten-free dreams are made! Nearly every item on this menu has a gluten free option, and anywhere that serves haloumi is a winner in my books. What this small café lacks in size it makes up in mammoth breakfast and lunch servings, where food is as tasty as it is healthy. Pawpaw café is where acai meets bacon (and serves food that actually fills six-foot-four carb guzzling boyfriends). Their milkshakes are awesome as well.

If PawPaw's little sister Raw Paw Paw had been your go to before it closed (it was mine!), Little Loco will fill the spot. There are plenty of gluten free, veg and delicious options here. If you're after something sweet, their Acai bowls are amazing!

The Fishmonger’s Wife
Craving some good-old-fashioned beer battered juicy goodness that is fish and chips? The Fishmonger team are squashing those wheat cravings, with a gluten-free menu that includes battered fish and beer with a twist. With over ten years’ experience, these guys are the pearls of the ocean and go way beyond the realm of simple grilled, battered and crumbed fish serving the likes of Moroccan infused barramundi and lemongrass snapper.
6/86 Lytton Road, East Brisbane
The struggle is real when it comes to eating burgers for gluten intolerants. But the team at DA’Burger has everyone covered with flavour packed burgers as big as your face. I nearly went into a gluten-free coma after I tried their famous succulent lamb pattie smothered in warm onion and streaky bacon. The burgers are better here (that’s a promise!).
876 Brunswick Street, New Farm
Daydreaming of a delicious thin crust pizza or al dente pasta? Alfredo’s can make that a reality with scrumptious gluten-free options available. This Italian and rock ‘n’ roll themed restaurant serves up lasagne that will put your mum’s to shame (Sorry mum) and some of Brisbane’s best pizzas that have the perfect ratio of cheese to topping. Affordable comfort food at its finest. Make sure to leave room for the nutella pizza!
39 Alfred Street, Fortitude Valley
Flour & Chocolate
What meal would be complete without a little dessert? With gluten-free options available, Flour & Chocolate’s delicate creations will have you swooning over which picture to Instagram next. I’m talking brownies oozing salted caramel and flourless hazelnut loafs topped with ripe raspberries. This place is perfect for satisfying that sweet tooth.
