Play catch-up with me every fortnight as I give you a taste of what you’ve missed and what’s to come in Brisbane’s Food+Drink scene.
1. Opa! Free Yiros
The Yiros Shop’s third location is now open in South Bank! On Saturday, March 12, they will celebrate with free yiros for all from 12pm to 4pm. The Grey Street location will serve traditional Greek dishes for lunch and dinner, with the addition of loukoumades (honey puffs/Greek doughnuts) to the menu.
2. Botero Brisbane Opens in CBD
This hidden three-storey espresso bar on Adelaide Street is awash with exposed brick, concrete walls, copper, leather and timber and has a strong focus on perfectly roasted coffee and healthy, quick lunches. Read our full story on the new venue here.
3. Welcome West End’s Billykart Provisions
Billykart West End, co-owned and operated by Chef Ben O’Donoghue and Ben Roberts, has launched Billykart Provisions – a new deli and bottle shop beside the existing restaurant and bar. The store stocks specialty deli items and artisan beverages, as well as house-made goodies such as jams, sauces and preserves.
4. New Neighbourhood Nordics
Keep an eye out for the new local eatery and bar opening soon in West End: Lokal+Co. It’s set to have a strong focus on locally-sourced produce with modern, seasonal dishes. We’ll update you when we know more.
5. Red Hill Markets Return
We were pretty sad when the Red Hill Farmer Markets closed down due to development plans on the Fulcher Road site. So we’re super stoked to hear they’ve found a new location and will reopen on April 17! The premium farmers’ market will be moving to Milton (on Cribb St) every Sunday from 6am to 12pm.
6. Say Hello To Harry
The minds behind Pan-Asian street food venue Junk and dessert vendor Donut Boyz are bringing the Sunshine Coast’s popular Hello Harry licensed burger bar franchise to Brisbane! The burger joint is known for its delicious, generous-sized burgers and casual and funky dining atmosphere. The locations are set to open over the next few months, with a Forest Lake location in March, a Milton location in May and a Hamilton location at Portside Wharf to follow.
7. Embers Challenge
Meat your match this month at Embers with their steak challenge (if you’re game)! For $49, you can attempt the meal solo or with a dining buddy. It includes an Argentinian-style grass-fed 700g rump steak served carved on a platter with chimichurri.
8. Healthy Hot Cross Buns
Easter will have plenty of opportunities for naughty chocolate-filled food, so why not opt for a healthier hot cross bun this year from Cake & Bake? Their soft, fruity, spiced buns are baked daily and are made from local, natural ingredients, including a house-blended spice and Australian dried fruits. The hot cross buns are available from now through to Easter.
Australian Gin Night | March 15
Love gin and good times? Felix For Goodness is hosting an Australian Gin Night in Burnett Lane with 10 boutique Australian gins to try, as well as gin paired canapés and cocktails! More info here.
Chili Cook Off | March 20
Kettle & Tin’s annual chili cook-off is back for its fourth year and the competition will be HOT! 10 teams will vie for the title of Chili Master and it will all be decided by the public vote. For $10, you can get entry, the opportunity to test the batches (if you’re game), one vote and a cold beer. More info here.
Sounds Good | March 24
Start your Good Friday and Easter long weekend early at The Triffid on Thursday, March 24. The Good Beer Co. is presenting this FREE event, which will give Brisbane live music acts a platform to perform in front of a local crowd. Check out the acts here.
