Play catch-up with me every fortnight as I give you a taste of what you’ve missed and what’s to come in Brisbane’s Food+Drink scene.
1. Caffeine for charity
Coffee makes us feel good in the morning, but buying a coffee on Friday, August 5 could DO GOOD, too! Thanks to an initiative called CafeSmart, your caffeine addiction will help fund local homeless services, with $1 from every coffee sold at participating cafés going towards those living tough on the streets. Check out the interactive map to find your nearest supporting café.
2. Hello Please Vietnamese
There’s a new kid on the block in Fish Lane and it’s a bold, fast-paced, colourful Vietnamese eating-house with an urban outdoor hideaway. Bringing vibrancy to the Fish Lane precinct, Hello Please delivers fresh, affordable and healthy food with maximum flavour; signature dishes include bao, dumplings, rice paper rolls and banh mi.
3. Yum Gelato hits Brisbane
You may have had a scoop of Yum Gelato’s delicious flavours in Coolum, but now you can treat yourself to their frozen treats without having to trek to the coast and get sand EVERYWHERE. Lytton Road in East Brisbane is your next dessert stop, with gelato, ice-cream sandwiches, milkshakes and cakes on foffer
4. MasterChef runner-up joins Eat Street Markets
Brisbane’s Eat Street Markets already have a food stall operated by previous MKR contestants Jake and Elle, but now it’s been announced that MasterChef Australia's 2016 runner-up Matt Sinclair will also be joining the vibrant container-city food markets along the Brisbane River in Hamilton. Matt plans to eventually expand his Southeast Asian street food stall into a food truck and catering brand.
5. Lunch at SONO
If you’re like me, you can easily spend upwards of $30 at a sushi train without thinking twice. But for a limited time you can now get this epic Makunouchi Bento special during lunchtime on Wednesdays and Fridays at Sono for only $35! I’m so there!
6. Rockin’ Restaurant
Spring Hill’s new Art Series Hotel opens next month and with it their new inspiring restaurant and café The Tumbling Stone. Stay tuned!
7. New to Eagle Lane
Melbourne favourite Chingón Cantina Y Taqueria is moving to Brisbane and opening up a hidden Mexican street food laneway restaurant! The venue will bring a taste of authentic, flavoursome Mexican street food to the CBD alongside popular live music venue Brooklyn Standard. Who can say no to tacos and tunes? C’mon!
8. The Hills Are Alive
This September, bar-diner Greenhill (an old name for the Petrie Terrace area) will lure locals with delicious food from various cultural influences and a select beverage list. Keep an eye out for more developments!
9. I carried a watermelon
You might have missed out on the epic watermelon and strawberry cake at the night noodle markets, but Harajuku Gyoza has a new watermelon-style dessert to tempt your tastebuds: a jelly served in watermelon skin. You can also spike it with some vodka in their Fortitude Valley restaurant. Always eat your jelly responsibly.
10. Turkish-inspired alfresco dining
Opening in the same newly-refurbed hub as Hawthorne newcomer British Colonial Co, Downtown Istanbul offers a courtyard-style dining venue with all the Turkish touches and menu offerings. Guests can expect the delectable Turkish pizzas, pides and grilled meats, along with some unique Turkish-inspired cocktails, craft beers and epic dessert tasting plates!
10. Three-storey (yes, THREE) German bier hall is coming!
Set to open in time for Oktoberfest, South Bank Parklands’ newest venue, Munich Brauhaus, will entice all the lederhosen- and dirndl dress-wearing locals to their massive German bier hall. The venue is set to have FIVE bars over THREE levels, with the capacity of seating 750 stein-loving folk. The venue will also offer a very German food menu, including pork knuckles, sauerkraut hot dogs and chicken schnitzel burgers.
1. Guillaume Brahimi Gourmet Getaway | Friday, August 12 to Sunday, August 14
Who doesn’t love a foodie weekend escape? When it’s at the luxury boutique hotel Halcyon House in Northern New South Wales, you just can’t say no. Join the hotel for their first ever showcase dinner with acclaimed chef Guillaume Brahimi and stay for a weekend of fine food and wine. 2. River Quay Winter Chef Series | Thursday, July 4 to Friday, August 26
Every fortnight, River Quay’s head chefs celebrate a different range of produce, highlighted through a special mid-week $45 two-course meal, with accompanying drink. During August, the fortnightly themes will be QLD nose-to-tail dining (Aug 1 to 12) and QLD salad bowl dining (Aug 15 to 26). Click here to see the menus.
3. RSPCA Cupcake Day with Botero and Sugar Hit | Monday, August 15
Brisbane café Botero has partnered with local cookbook author and blogger Sarah Coates from The Sugar Hit to offer CBD office workers cupcakes for the RSPCA’s Cupcake Day on August 15. The cupcakes will be on sale for $4 each and will feature flavours such as The Salty Dawg (Malteser and salted caramel) and a champagne and strawberry cupcake. For more info, click here.
