Play catch-up with me every fortnight as I give you a taste of what you’ve missed and what’s to come in Brisbane’s Food+Drink scene.
1. Peking Duck and Pizza
Third time’s the charm! With Sichuan Bang Bang & Pizzeria Violetta’s newest venue, the Style team feels like the luckiest of all. The dual restaurant has just opened a new venue four doors down from us on Wilston’s Kedron Brook Road and we’ve already jumped at the chance to trial both of the venue’s offerings. Seriously, who can say no when there’s an epic wood-fired pizza oven at the entrance and Chinese and traditional Italian share plates available across the venue? We can’t rave enough about the boscaiola pizza with mozzarella, porcini, mushrooms, bresaola, Taleggio and truffle oil and their salt and pepper soft shell crab!
2. New Local Nest
West End’s Bird’s Nest restaurant is spreading its wings and soaring over to Fortitude Valley to open a second location for foodies to perch over traditional Japanese Yakitori and modern drinks from the bar.
3. Brisbane’s Best Restaurant
The Brisbane Times Good Food Guide Awards 2017 presentation was held at Customs House on July 18 and we can now share with you the winner of Brisbane Restaurant of the Year. Congratulations to South Brisbane’s Gauge and their food dynamo Jerome Batten. Click here for a full list of award recipients so you can start adding them to your foodie checklist.
3. Yippee! Yiros in the City
*chants* Store number four, store number four! The Yiros Shop just opened a fourth store on Edward Street in the Brisbane CBD so city-slickers can get their slice of Greece every day of the week. To celebrate their opening, they’re holding another Free Yiros Day. Find out when, here.
Claiming to be Brisbane’s first vegan dessert bakehouse, Veganyumm has opened next to Charlie’s Raw Squeeze in Everton Park. This all-vegan eatery offers a variety of cupcakes, scrolls, doughnuts and cakes. They even have gluten-free options available! YUM.
5. Trafalgar Lane’s newest Italian
New Woolloongabba development Trafalgar Lane is opening venues left, right and centre and Ristorante la Famiglia is the newest addition. The traditional Italian venue’s trendy décor features exposed brick and black walls and serves a range of entrées, pastas and mains, as well as these gorgeous desserts.
6. East meets Sweet
Doughnut Time and Mister Fitz have expanded to Brisbane’s East to open a dual concept store on Lytton Road! Mister Fitz’s signature ice-cream sandwiches and Doughnut Time’s delectable doughnuts will be on offer. And for those Pokémon trainers out there, this is one of only two Brisbane venues offering the special Poké Ball doughnut designs! Gotta catch ’em all.
8. Stay Later at Lokal + Co
West End’s secret Nordic cafe hangout, Lokal + Co, is now open for extended trade on Friday and Saturday nights for a cheeky wine and tasty Nordic-inspired dinner.
9. Food Truck Finder
Sick of having to trawl Google, Facebook and Instagram to find out whether one of your favourite food trucks is nearby? Brisbane City Council has come to the rescue with a website that shows where they are and what they’re serving at any given time.
