Whether you blew your savings on a Contiki trip (no judgment), are saving for a house deposit (no avocado for you), or simply lack basic budgeting skills (can relate), sometimes there’s not heaps of money in the bank for unnecessary things like dining out. While we know that we should purchase fresh produce from the market and meal prep each week to save money on food, it’s no secret that sometimes we’d really just rather eat out. The food is better, it’s a million times easier than cooking, and the atmosphere is so much better than that of your kitchen.

So if you’re feeling the pinch right now, we’ve put together some of our favourite cheap eats in Brisbane to make the wait until payday just that little bit easier. And before you start lecturing us on our spending, save it. We already know we have the fiscal responsibility of a five-year old…

Miss Jones | New Farm

For only $16, you can nab their mouth-watering and delicious breakfast burger. With crispy bacon, a fried egg, rocket, onion jam, cheddar, and chipotle mayo sandwiched between a toasted brioche bun, this is enough to make you forget about how far away payday is for a little while.

Clancy’s Espresso | Norman Park

This southside favourite is known for their delish coffee, but if you’re penny-pinching for a few days it’s their freshly made bagels that you gotta know about. Grab one with your choice of spread for a measly $6, or jazz it up a bit with chicken or pastrami for an easy $10.

Nude Sisters Wholefood Kitchen | Miami

If you’re looking for some plant-based eats, Nude Sisters Wholefood Kitchen is the bees-knees (but not literally). For a wholesome, nutritious and delicious breakfast, you can’t go past their vegan chocolate chip pancakes. Served with banana, strawberries, vegan coconut ice cream, roasted macadamias and a vegan caramel sauce, this is what we would spend our last $20-bill on.

King Arthur | Fortitude Valley

There’s a lot to love about the seasonal and inspired menu at King Arthur, but nothing quite so much as the fact that you can score most dishes on the brekkie menu for less than a measly $20! The house granola with coconut yoghurt is a must try, and you can also grab your coffee of choice and still receive change. Score!

The Jam Pantry | Greenslopes

Not only is The Jam Pantry a Brisbane institution, it’s also a popular destination for those who want a thrifty feed that’s full of flavour. Their menu is seasonal and changes regularly, but you can keep up to date with all of Nim’s new innovations on their Facebook page. At the moment, we are loving their omelette – served with chevre, beetroot, brown rice, fresh radishes and black garlic dressing.

Botanica Real Food | Red Hill & Teneriffe

Here at Style HQ, we are massive Botanica fiends. They are our go-to for staff catering thanks to their healthy and delicious options and super lovely staff. If you want a quick and easy lunch that doesn’t involve a greasy fast food joint, you need to pick up their $11 salad box. The kale and crouton salad will change your life.

Betty’s Burgers | Multiple Locations

You can enjoy an entire meal at Betty’s with all your fave trimmings! Grab the $10 Betty’s Classic burger (Angus beef, lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese and special sauce), $6 beer battered onion rings and whatever soft drink you choose. Yes pleeeasseeee.

Melt Brothers | Brisbane CBD

If you need a lil’ comfort food to get you through to payday, the cheesy, oozy goodness from Melt Brothers is like being wrapped in a warm hug. Most of their cheesy sammies are around the $10 mark, meaning you can load up on extras. How does potato gems, two fried eggs and sriracha mayo sound?

Suki | Multiple Locations

Cheap eats don’t need to ruin that banging body you’ve got. For something a little healthier than a greasy toastie and just as delicious, grab a sushi burrito from Suki. The Raw’nchy burrito from their menu includes kingfish, ponzu sauce, spinach, cabbage, edamame, cucumber, cherry tomatoes and avocado for only $16.50.

The Lamb Shop | Bowen Hills & Gold Coast

We rave about The Lamb Shop here at Style. The meat is so tender, the fries are perfectly crisp, and it’s such a quick and easy meal for when you’re on the go. For $14.50, you can tuck into their lamb souvlaki with tender lamb from the spit, onion, parsley, mustard mayo and chips.

Ben’s Burgers | Fortitude Valley

All the pickings from Ben’s Burg’s are $12, meaning plenty of leftover dosh for extras such as cheese, jalapeños, or candied bacon. But if you are really keen to save some dollars, they are now doing 2-for-1 Sundays every week! Grab 2 standard menu burgers for the price of one as use your leftover coin for a couple of drinks. The house-made ginger ale with spiced rum is primo.

The Coop Bistro | Fortitude Valley

There are plenty of cracking good deals at The Coop Bistro no matter what night of the week you’re feeling cash-strapped. On Wednesdays you can enjoy 2-for-1 parmys for $20; Thursdays you can tuck into $3 tacos; and Friday you can score any burger with a side of crunchy, golden fries for just $10. Baller!

Fat Dumpling Bar | Bowen Hills & Fortitude Valley

If you haven’t tried the deliciousness that is Fat Dumpling Bar, cancel all your plans and make your way there STAT. The menu is a delish selection of authentic dumplings all at budget-friendly prices. We recommend you go with a few pals and order a bunch of share plates. Between four of you, you’ll be able to enjoy a super satisfying meal for less than $20 each.

Johnny’s Pizzeria | Fortitude Valley

Brisbane is popping with stunning Italian joints, with Johnny’s Pizzeria being one of our faves. All their pizzas are a cruisey $12 meaning you’ve got extra dosh for a bev if you feel so inclined. Alternatively, hit them up on Friday for $5 pizzas with every drinks purchase! Score!

Corbett & Claude | Multiple Locations

There are a million reasons to love Corbett & Claude (cocktails, gnocchi and cute décor – oh my!) but their stellar menu is definitely one of our faves. Most pickings from their menu are under $20, but if you’re feeling really thrifty we’ve heard they offer $10 classic pizzas on Mondays when you sign up to their news…
