Bulimba's best bites

Don't often make it to across the river to Bulimba to dine? Rebecca Lawerence from Love Your Local shares her fave restaurants for a quick bite in the area.

If you’re thinking of heading out for a bite to eat but have nowhere specific in mind, Bulimba’s Oxford Street is a fail-safe destination any day of the week.  The street is bristling with cafes, restaurants and fast-food joints but here’s a few pointers to help you narrow down your choice.

Sugo Mi

Sugo Mi is consistently voted one of Brissie’s best pizza places year after year and the voters aren’t wrong.  The pizzas are traditional yet unclichéd with fabulous fresh ingredients ensuring even the most basic margherita is something out of the ordinary, presented on a large olive wood board with its own wheelie pizza slice to add to the authenticity.  And the local’s top tip?  Wander down the side of the restaurant to the gelataria behind for some of the most mouth-watering, home made gelato on the Southside!

Ceylon Inn

If you are looking for a bit more spice to your night then a few doors up you can find Ceylon Inn with its famous chunky wooden booths outside.  This is a great choice for large groups offering banquet deals and fabulous plates to share.  The service is good but the curries are superb!

Sushi Mura

Sushi lovers are well catered for in Bulimba but true devotees should venture up to the top of Oxford Street to discover local gem Sushi Mura. While there is plenty of sushi ready prepared for those in a rush to grab and run, if you are eating in, the cooked salmon sushi is simply the best I’ve tasted in Australia or Japan.  The best part is that as one of Bulimba’s best kept secrets you can usually get a table, and service is super quick and efficient too.

Pompidou Cafe

For those prepared to stray a little beyond Oxford St, Pompidou Café is a firm favourite for breakfast, coffee, lunch or for one of their specialty nights when they pair beautiful French food and wine in a set menu to conjure up a night from owner Phillip’s native France.  Local mums will attest that Pompidou also whips up a way too good white chocolate and Oreo milkshake that will put a smile on the dial of the crankiest kid - or a few centimetres on the waistline of parents tempted too often by this wicked treat!

1/208 Riding Road, Balmoral
P 3399 5539

More adventurous foodies looking for something off the beaten track should head up Riding Road to Hawthorne Park on the first and third Fridays of the month.  Some of Brissie’s best street food pulls in from 4pm and offers a tantalising array of tastes from around the globe.  One thing is for certain; your taste buds won’t get bored in Bulimba any time soon!
