Brisbane's best new bars and cafes

Brisbane is booming with a host of bars, eateries and cafes cropping up all over town. Here is our pick of the best new places to try out.

Red Hook

Red Hook (pictured) is the newbie on Brisbane’s Gresham laneway. Following Brisbane’s rising laneway culture and current obsession with all things American, Red Hook is sure to hit the mark with locals. The latest creative venture from hospitality pair Bonnie Shearston and Tom Sanceau, the menu will offer a range of waffles, NYC hotdogs, battered pickles, tacos and a selection of American beers. Indulge your love of American cuisine and be transported to the city that never sleeps.

The Flying Cock

Despite what the name may have lead you to believe, The Flying Cock is not the male equivalent of Love and Rockets; it's actually a gastropub/ bar located in the heart of Fortitude Valley. Spearheaded by a troupe of locals, the menu will boast the likes of ‘farm raised craft beers’, ‘cage free cocktails’ and ‘free range pub grub’. The “half-cocked’ menu will be replaced by a permanent one upon the official opening later this month. What a relief to see the Valley is finally getting its ducks in a row… or chickens. Either way, The Flying Cock is set to attract the flocks.

388 Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley

Atticus Finch

Atticus Finch is a puppy-friendly café nestled into Paddington’s Latrobe Terrace. It offers a wholesome menu that caters to the coffee fanatics, sweet tooths and savoury lovers. Walls papered with pages from Harper Lee’s classic ‘Too Kill a Mockingbird’ and seats covered in tapestry cushions, this café is simply, but beautifully decorated. Boasting an authentic, homemade vibe, Atticus Finch is the perfect Sunday brunch spot for you and your pooch.

83 Latrobe Terrace, Paddington

Paleo Café Bulimba

Paleo Café is located in the Oxford street precinct of Bulimba with a specialised menu of gluten free, dairy free and sugar free options. Adding on from locations in Brisbane CBD, North Lakes and Paddington, the Bulimba newbie is proof that Brisbanites cannot get enough of the delicious, guilt free feasts. You can also gain some inspo’ so you can embrace your inner neanderthal man at home with a range of groceries, supplements and cookbooks on offer.

Ooh Mami

Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty gourmet sandwich, Moroccan spices or a creamy soup made with love, Ooh Mami has got you covered. Paying homage to their mother’s cooking, this menu offers healthy, wholesome and modern feasts for all tastes. Situated on the corner of Oxford and Riddell streets Bulimba, Ooh Mami is the perfect option for mid-week takeaway or dine in experience.

210 Oxford St, Bulimba

Ben’s Burgers

While we’re a bit sad our fave Flamingo Café has vacated the spot in Winn Lane, the arrival of Ben’s Burgers in its place has made up for it. The menu is simple but effective, with a selection of three burgers. The BB Classic and BB Special are for the carnivores of the pack, while the BB veg is the vegetarian option with 2 types of cheeses and a whole mushroom. They also offer dessert and breakfast and a selection of Burleigh Brewing Company beers on tap to help wash down those juicy burgers.

5A Winn Lane, Winn Street, Fortitude Valley

The Dirty South

The Dirty South is a southern American themed restaurant that has recently opened its doors on Latrobe Terrace, Paddington. If you’re looking for an overly indulgent, overly US of A style menu (think hot wings, candied bacon, ribs and country-fried chicken) this venue is a must. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into the Deep South with vintage oilcans and retro posters adorning the walls. It’s BYO, opens late and boasts stunning Brisbane city views. What’s not to love?

180 Latrobe Terrace, Paddington

Southern Attitude

While we’re on the theme of Southern USA themed restaurants, there’s no ignoring the newly opened bar and restaurant, Southern Attitude of Bulimba. With an extensive list of whisky and a menu that includes chilli fries, molasses braised pork belly and popcorn shrimp this menu is perfect for those with a solid appetite. Grab your Stetson and head on down.
