There are two kinds of people in this world: those who love Mexican and those who need a tastebud transplant. Our favourite cuisine causes quite the fiesta when it comes to mealtime, because who doesn’t love the prospect of tacos and margaritas? If you’re in the mood for delicious food, these are the best Mexican spots to make your tummy shout “Olé!” You can say “Muchas gracias mi amigo” to us later.
Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant and Tequila Bar, Newmarket
Pepe’s has gained citywide acclaim for serving up some of the best Mexican in Brisbane. Generous servings of shredded beef nachos, tostadas and sizzling fajitas will have your tongue wagging. Grab a drink from their lively bar, with an extensive range of cocktails, Mexican spirits and more than 150 varieties of tequila if you need an extra kick. Still not convinced? Why not try a morning feed, with options of breakfast burritos, omelettes and crepas de cajeta (think goat milk caramel-soaked crepes).
Sin Vida, Fortitude Valley
Celebrate the Day of the Dead all year long with Sin Vida’s authentic dining experience. Their menu offers a wide variety of delectable choices and share plates, including tostadas de pulpo (barbecued octopus, papaya and pineapple salad dish) and swordfish con adobo (swordfish, chorizo and blackened onion with a tomato and dried chilli paste dressing). Be sure to also wash down your meal with a jug of sangria (or two).
La Quinta, Bulimba
There’s good reason why La Quinta has remained a favourite among Bulimba locals for over 10 years. Vibrant, delicious and colourful food means this Mexican hub is never quiet and almost always packed. There are traditional Mexican dishes such as nachos, burritos and enchiladas, as well as a selection of wings and primeros (share plates). Play with fire, if you dare, with a choice of five chilli dishes.
St Baxter, New Farm
This Californian eatery serves up fresh Mexican food and slurp-worthy cocktails in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Choose from street food, tapas for two, larger plates, desserts and even weekend brekkies including huevos rancheros and quesadillas. Thirsty? Try the family-recipe sangria – you won’t be disappointed.
El Torito, West End
This family-owned gem has been around since 1996, making it another long-standing favourite. El Torito brings customers authentic Mexican flavours and crowd-favourite dishes. Tuck into chimichangas, chilaquiles and tinga poblana, to name a few. There’s also a wide variety of margarita tequilas, including flavours of strawberry, passionfruit and tamarind. Fill your tummy and your glass all night long.
Guzman Y Gomez, Various Brisbane locations
With their motto “Mi case es su casa”, you’re sure to feel at home in one of their many warm, energetic and colourful venues. Guzman Y Gomez prides itself on real Mexican flavours combined with fresh Australian ingredients. Burritos are the most popular item on the menu, but we reckon their churros are worthy of a fiesta.
Burrito Shack, Fortitude Valley
This Mexican joint, run by Tuckeria, was the first food pod to pop up in Brunswick Street Mall serving burritos, tacos and nachos on the go. It brings a casual vibe to Mexican fare, with seating available beside the food pod if you want to savour the taste… or just don’t want to risk chowing down while walking and making a right mess of yourself. Fun fact: they also do breakfast burritos! YUM.
