Brisbane’s Best Ice-Cream and Gelato: 2016 Edit

This list is out of cone-trol!

By Annabelle Beirne | 7th December 2016

If you’re going to splurge on dessert, you want to be sure that it’s going to hit the spot. So we’ve updated our list of places in Brisbane’s best ice-cream venues to satisfy your sweet tooth. Prefer gelato? There’s no need to suffer from those withdrawals! This directory has something for you too.

Before we begin, I thought I could perhaps answer the question on everyone’s lips: what is the difference between gelato and ice-cream? Well, the difference is the way in which they are processed. Gelato is churned more slowly so it is less aerated, making it denser, and it’s comprised of more milk. Ice-cream contains more cream and egg yolks. Whichever you prefer, these icy treats will never give you up or let you down… but they will dessert you.

La Macelleria Gelateria | Teneriffe

All gelato is churned freshly on-site. If you’re looking for a taste of Italy then this is your best bet in Brisbane by far. Highly recommend the Bacio Australiano and Caramello Salato.

Lick! Icecream and Dessert Graceville | Graceville

If you like your ice-cream thick and creamy, Lick! is the perfect venue for you. Their dessert bar also provides you with a vast range of choices.

Oceanic Gelati & Coffee Bar | Point Lookout, North Stradbroke Island

Not that you need an excuse to visit North Stradbroke Island but the gelato at Point Lookout is something else… not to mention the view.

Beccofino | Teneriffe

At one of the best Italian restaurants in Brisbane you’ll that find Budino (steamed pear and gingerbread pudding with fior di latte ice-cream) is a must on the dessert menu.

Ristorante Tartufo | Fortitude Valley

They may serve up the most delicious gnocchi in Brisbane, but Tartufo’s dessert menu shouldn’t be forgotten. Try the panna cotta al miele e vaniglia (honey and vanilla-infused panna cotta served with house-made gelato).

Mister Fitz | Fortitude Valley, East Brisbane, South Bank

The heavenly place where all of your ice-cream sandwich dreams and wishes come to life in the most colourful way imaginable.

Gelato Messina | South Bank

COMING SOON - within the first couple of months of the new year.
Hands down the best gelato menu in Australia. The list of choices is never-ending and the flavours of the day will always hit the spot. P.S. If you can’t wait until next year, you could always head down the coast to their store at Cooloongatta…

Sandgate Fishmonger | Sandgate

Not just renowned for their fish and chips, the Sandgate Fishmonger also stocks the perfect post-dinner treat to satisfy that sweet craving after those salty potato fries.

1889 Enoteca | Woolloongabba

If you’re a fan of fruity sorbets, then there is most definitely a dessert on this charming Italian restaurant’s menu that will be right up your alley.

Jeppo Gelato | Cleveland

Amongst the ricotta hot cakes, smoked salmon and truffle eggs, you’ll also find the most delicious gelato.

Dimanche | Bulimba

Dimanche stocks ice-cream AND gelato so there’s something that will please every tastebud here. You can also order the most ridiculously amazing ice-cream cakes in town!

Pawpaw Café | Woolloongabba

If you’re searching for a healthier alternative or your stomach sits on the more sensitive side, coco whip is the perfect dessert for you. It’s not what we’d call ice-cream or gelato but it’s a gluten- and dairy-free vegan option for those in search of a nice treat.

Chester Street Bakery | Newstead

So much more than your ordinary choc top – Chester St takes this classic treat to a whole new level. WARNING: Richness factor is incredibly high (for all the right reasons).

Julius Pizzeria | South Brisbane

But should you stay for dessert? Do I even have to dignify that question with an answer? Make sure you leave room for the frittelle- fried brioche dumplings, filled with strawberry jam, served with fior di latte ice cream. You can thank me later.

Gelateria Cremona | Paddington

This gelato bar is located in the heart of Rosalie and is the perfect place to stop in on a hot summer’s night. Their gelato is served true Italian style.

NomNom Natural Gelato | Bulimba

This family-owned business is conveniently located on Oxford Street in Bulimba. They may serve tantalising gelato and sorbet made with Queensland’s Maleny milk, but this place was inspired by the flavours of Italy.

Il Posto Paddington | Bulimba

There is no better place to enjoy a Nutella calzone than in Paddington. It’s served with the most delightful vanilla bean gelato so prepare your tastebuds in advance.
