After toying with a modern-style Spanish menu for two years, the team at Peasant have stripped back to basics and are now plating up traditional simple flavours. Spanish-born consultant chef Alfonso Ales (newcomer to the Peasant team) says the menu is no longer an interpretation of Spanish food - it’s now the real deal! Owner Jamie Webb admits they struggled at first to find the perfect fit, starting with a menu based on complex colours and combinations. But Peasant, as the name implies, is about the simple things in life and the guys want this to translate through everything they do.
The new summer menu plays off the staples of Spanish food, teasing us with dishes like toasted sourdough with velvety tomato sauce, olive oil and toppings of jamon, anchovies or cured tuna loin. The delicious garlic prawns with lemon are well on their way to becoming a core favourite, and you simply can’t go past the rich, flavoursome “Grandma’s Style” jamon croquettes that absolutely melt in your mouth.
Even the more substantial items are kept rustic and simple, like the grilled green asparagus with Romesco sauce, pork fillet stuffed with Serrano ham and cheese, and the delicious chicken with garlic sauce. And as the food is “designed to drink with” don’t miss out on sampling some of their crisp Spanish whites or light reds, perfect for cutting through the rich flavours. Peasant’s wine list boasts an extensive array of cheap cheerful tables wines accompanied by a selection of vinos from some of the oldest wineries in Spain - a classy yet accessible list that complements both the food and the quirky, authentically Spanish interior. Owner Jamie Webb wanted to go for something like nothing else in Brisbane. The low-lit space, with long communal timber tables promotes a (tres Spanish) shared family dining experience rather than traditional formal dining.
Whether you’re eating at the bar, grazing in the garden or indulging in a banquet, Peasant’s new summer menu will have your mouth watering from the minute you walk in the door and get that first whiff of Spanish authenticity.
