Fruity, spiced and naughty but nice, Brisbane bakers are working hard to improve the quality and range of the traditional Easter treat. We just can’t wait for Good Friday – with Brisbane’s best hot-cross buns, every day is good!
1. Cake & Bake, West End
If you love to keep your produce local, even at Easter, then you need Cake & Bake. Soft, fruity and spiced hot cross buns are made from local, natural ingredients, including a house-blended spice and Australian dried fruits. You can even purchase locally-made butter and honey to spread said buns.
2. Chouquette, New Farm
These glazed babies are made from brioche dough, with dried fruit and spices and a white chocolate cross! This year’s batch might be missing nuts, but people are still going nuts for them! We recommend calling up to reserve some, especially if you suffer from serious FOMO.
3. The Baker’s Arms, Woolloongabba
This cute café/bakehouse serves up delightful handcrafted hot cross buns made with cranberry, currants, sultanas and mixed spices. Stop in for coffee and breakfast and take one (or six) home to share (or not share).
4. Brumby’s, Brisbane-wide
Oh Brumby’s, every year without fail you make the girls at the Style office so very happy because NUTELLA! The simple addition of Nutella to the inside of your buns doesn’t go unnoticed. #sorrynotsorry for gobbling up all your stock.
5. Flour & Chocolate, Morningside
Don’t let the decadent name fool you – while this bakery is known for serving up next-level sweet treats and pastries, their hot cross buns are full of fruity flavours, with figs, raisins, sultanas, cherries and cranberries added to their batches this year.
6. Crust & Company Artisan Baking, Newmarket
Wondering where all the hot cross buns with nuts have gone? Never fear because Crust & Company is here! These delicious hot cross buns are infused with roasted almonds, along with figs, dates, cinnamon, clove and nutmeg.
7. Sun & Earth Organics, New Farm
This New Farm location prides itself on being “Brisbane’s only NASAA certified organic health food store”. You can purchase a range of organic hot cross buns from Victoria’s Healthybake and Sunshine Coast’s Walter’s Artisan Bread. They stick to tradition and include gluten-free, spelt and sourdough varieties.

Dello Mano has been creating these delights since 2006 and it’s the perfect way to merge our two Easter indulgences: hot cross buns and chocolate! Well, maybe it’s just the chocolate indulgence… but it still has a cross!

The Flour & Chocolate team has done it again! We had to add them to this list twice because our minds were blown by this brilliance. Their dusted, spiced fruit doughnuts are stuffed with white chocolate ganache and have a hidden surprise within them.
Hot cross truffles
Couverture & Co. in Red Hill is making non-traditional Easter treats a little bit fancy by adorning chocolate (milk or dark) ganache hot cross truffles with a white cross. These treats are packed with all the Easter flavours, including cinnamon and raisin fruits.
Hot cross gelato
Gelateria Cremona in Rosalie has more than 200 flavours in their repertoire and we can confirm the hot cross bun gelato is back for 2016! The gelato has a white chocolate base with white chocolate sauce, dark chocolate bits, minimal spices and even pieces of bun! DROOL.
Hot cross ice cream
Hop into Burger Project to get an Easter Bunny approved Hot Cross Bun Ice Cream that will only be available over the long weekend (Friday 14th April – Monday 17th April). Famed for its rich and creamy soft serve that’s churned in-house daily, Burger Project’s Easter version comprises vanilla soft serve, rum-soaked raisins and cinnamon, with a chocolate shell topping, and white chocolate crisscross.
