This year is already forecast to be a pretty epic one. Not even eight weeks in, the River City is dropping the clutch, switching gears and taking things up a notch. There’s a whole host of to-be foodie faves opening their doors this Autumn. To say we’re already drooling like a border collie on a hot day would be an understatement. And we’re not talking about just a few new restaurants… We’re talking about full-on, next level, game-changing precincts – Brisbane developments that are set to totally change our foodie scene. And not just one either! Get your cutlery and schooner-holding hand at the ready, 2018 is about to bring it.
There’s no denying that food trucks are pretty much the greatest. The speed of fast food combined with the taste-bud tingling deliciousness of restaurant dining. What’s not to love? Welcome to Bowen Hills is the answer to Brisbane’s prayers: an epic new venue entirely dedicated to food trucks. In a nod to the past, Welcome to Bowen Hills sits on the site of the old Dairy Hall and Sugar Building. Offering an endless rotation of food trucks, a permanent indoor bar serving craft tipples and cocktail jugs, the space is complete with a swanky fit-out of leather booths and stylish seating. Gear up for atmospheric outdoor dining and beer garden vibes, unlike anything Brisbane has seen before. The official launch party is set for February 27, and their onsite specialised gin bar, Swill, will be ready to start pouring in mid-March.
The rumour mill has been working overtime with whispers of The Valley’s most Instagram-able social hub, X Cargo, circulating wildly for nearly nine months now. Just like a certain Kardashian/Jenner pregnancy, the constant back and forth between “is it or isn’t it happening” has been driving us crazy! We’re thrilled to officially confirm that all systems are go. A few weeks ago, a brand-new application was submitted to (and approved by) Brisbane City Council, meaning we’re getting set for an April opening! In a prime location on McLachlan Street, X Cargo is everything we’ve been dreaming of, and more. With three levels of drinking and dining, this is a social playground like no other. With a full kitchen, a café, two individual bars, a rooftop balcony, outdoor seating and modern landscaping throughout, we’re chomping at the bit to cheers a few bevvies here.
In addition to X Cargo, the long-anticipated California Lane is ready to flip Fortitude Valley dining on its head. From the folks who developed Winn Lane and Bakery Lane, this new venture has already begun construction and is set to open on Brunswick Street mid-year. Channelling vintage West Coast vibes, expect to see California Lane decked out with the likes of palm trees, pastel walls and neon signs. With room for six new restaurants to open their doors, we’re predicting this hot new spot will give South Brisbane’s Fish Lane a run for its money. Expect to see established favourites like Fat Dumpling and Ltd Espresso as well as a bunch of exciting new venues. We’re getting hungry just thinking about it.
