Bow down to Bao Down Now

Chinatown in Fortitude Valley offers up a hot new addition to the late-night dining and bar scene in Brisbane, focusing on the fluffy goodness of bao buns.

Brisbane is developing quite the reputation for excellent late-night bites and Fortitude Valley’s Bao Down Now, located in Chinatown, is no exception. Well… it may actually be THE exception because of its unique approach to Asian cuisine.

With a dream to create a social hub offering a great atmosphere and greater food, Co-Owners Dean Davison and Samuel Vega wanted to concentrate on one style of food and do it damn well: the bao bun.

The menu features a wide variety of bao buns with oh-so-yummy-sounding fillings such as karaage fried chicken, pork jowl and smoked butter emulsion, seared marinated beef, fried tofu and shiitake mushrooms and even a scrummy sounding dessert option. And if you’re not down with the light and fluffy bun goodness (what kind of monster are you?!) there’s also a rice bowl alternative for each of the fillings. Everything here, right down to the bun dough, is made fresh and on site. And the best part? The kitchen will stay open until 2am – and they do takeaway – thus providing a delicious alternative to the awkward stumble home clutching a greasy Valley kebab.

Featuring bespoke graffiti walls created by local artists, dramatic chandeliers and uber-ambient mood lighting, the atmosphere here is said to be almost as good as the food.

And on top of being an exciting addition to the dining scene, the owners have decided that post 10pm, the back half of the joint will be curtained off and turned into a hot nightclub and Brisbane bar. The venue will have DJs on hand to pump out good vibes. Drinks wise, the house special – the shared teapot cocktails – really capitalises on the Asian fusion theme. Spirits not your thing? Never fear! There are plenty of craft beers to wet your whistle.

To celebrate their doors finally being open, Bao Down Now are hosting a grand opening party Friday September 11 from 6pm. Trays of delicious bao will be roaming the venue all night in search of eager tummies. Make sure to RSVP via their Facebook page so they can keep the baos fast, furious and plentiful.
