Sydney may be renovating an abandoned underground railway system soon-to-be bar, but a basement level bar and Chinese Diner will do us just fine. Boom Boom Room and Donna Chang, both situated on 171 George Street, are the newest editions to Brisbane’s rapidly growing foodie scene.

This bank vault turned luxe, underground bar and ground-level Chinese diner are set to rock our worlds, one spring roll at a time. Established by the cocktail geniuses behind Byblos Bar & Restaurant and Blackbird Bar & Grill, Boom Boom Room and Donna Chang is a duo made in hospitality heaven.

Sharing this heritage listed sandstone building, this bar and restaurant have all bases covered. Boom Boom Room was crafted into an underground, avant-garde cocktail lounge, boasting a serious cocktail list, as expected, but also a unique bar experience. With jazz, blues and soul sounds revibrating off the walls scratched with history, it’s a drinking experience like none-other. You can expect red velvet booths and premium table service in this room of a luxurious, silky reality. With the sensual option of hiring out a private room in an old bank vault, this building has a visible past of its own and a strong cryptic ambience. An ideal combination for Friday evening drinks, these guys are open every day from 12:00pm.

While sharing a roof, Donna Chang entertains a very different vibe. Flaming Sichuan flavours and Cantonese cuisine mix together in this modern Chinese restaurant, giving the humble san choy bau a much-needed break. Open for lunch and dinner, you can mostly expect an array of seafood-based dishes, bursting with the delectable flavours of chilli, ginger and soy, that we oh-so adore. Serving up some Arakai Estate Green Tea from Bellthorpe, everything here has been sourced locally. If you’re after something a little stronger, Donna Chang also has their own cocktail menu for the complete dining experience. An appetiser of hand-crafted cocktails paired with a main of Kung pao prawns is a yes from us. Every Friday night ever is now sorted.
