6 Foods to Help You Sleep Better

Food and sleep – the perfect combination.

By Amber Lowther | 31st May 2016

Sometimes, no matter how tired you are, you just can’t fall asleep! If only there were something you could eat to get you on your merry way. Well, I’m here to help you solve the puzzle! I’ve done my research and have found six foods to help you sleep better. I know, it sounds magical. Get on down to Woolies and put these in your basket pronto!

Dairy Products

Whether it’s milk, cream or yoghurt, dairy products can help you sleep better. And good news! That cheese thing? Total myth. Dairy products contain the sleep-inducing amino acid tryptophan (sounds a bit like a dinosaur to me). Basically it helps produce chemicals that make you zzzz all night long, ALLLLL NIGHT LONG. So if you find yourself ready to pass out after a glass of milk, it’s doing its job. All. Night. Long.

Bananas

If you go bananas for bananas like I do, you’ll be dancing your way to bed! These babies contain natural muscle relaxants magnesium and potassium so instead of having a full body massage (pfft, who wants one of those?), you can just munch away on a banana. But don’t worry, you won’t be nodding off if you have one in the morning, bananas improve the overall quality of your sleep rather than making you immediately sleepy.

Almonds

If you just cbf having dairy products or peeling a banana, you can always chew away on a handful of almonds! They contain tryptophan (dinosaur) and magnesium, which help to steady your heart rhythm and reduce muscle and nerve function. They also contain protein, which means you won’t have to get up for midnight snacks - but I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing?

Fish

If going to the fish and chips shop makes yo’ day then hold out for dinner so you can get a great sleep under your belt! Fish such as tuna and salmon are high in vitamin B6, which helps calm and maintain a healthy nervous system and it produces that sleep-inducing hormone. My pick of the lot is salmon because it’s way too delicious for words and it contains omega-3 fatty acids.

Cherry Juice

So obviously this isn’t something you can munch on but it’s close enough! By drinking cherry juice, you can sleep better and for longer. Cherries are high in melatonin, which helps to ease insomnia, jetlag, make your immune system fabulous and extend your life. Pretty amazing stuff, right? Before you go singing Cherry Pie, give it a try! If you can’t find the juice, try eating fresh, frozen or dried cherries instead.

Chamomile Tea x Honey

Chamomile Tea is actually nicknamed "sleep tea" so if this ain't gettin' you to sleep, you're a wizard! It's been used since ancient times to fight insomnia and other health complications. Considering it’s still being used to put people to sleep, I think it’s doing a darn good job! It’s super easy to get your hands on and it keeps you warm on those chilly nights – win-win.
