I may not actually be from America but I’ve always wanted to celebrate the 4th of July because, well, it looks like buckets of fun! American food is a bit insane but super delicious so can you blame me?! What if I told you you could eat like a Yank without leaving Brissie? To get you in the spirit, I’ve put together a list of 10 places to eat for the 4th of July! IT’S PARTY (NOT) IN THE USA!
Brooklyn Standard, Brisbane
Get your butt to Brooklyn Standard for their 4th of July party! Their fave four crazy Mexicans, The Mad Mariachis, will be bringin’ down the house while you drink tequila, down some pretzels and tear it up on the d-floor! It’s free entry and it will be going off from 4pm until late. Mexico is close enough to the USA, so just roll with it.
Miss Kays, Brisbane
If you love American-style burgers, you can’t go past Miss Kays in the CBD! Get your MURICA on and grab their Mac Daddy burger. It has MAC’N’CHEESE on it! This is NOT a drill! If you prefer something a little more low-key, try their cheeseburger, which is out-of-this-world-good! They also have wings, onion rings and dirty fries. Enjoy their milkshakes or get something a bit stronger from the bar!
Doughnut Time, Various locations
To celebrate the launch of Good Food Month and the 4th of July, Doughnut Time has created a new doughnut just for the occasion. You’ll be able to get your hands on an “Oh My Stars and Stripes” doughnut from 10am on the 4th. They’ll be bringing their vintage caravan (“Barbara”) to Wintergarden and the first 300 will get one FO’ FREE! If you can’t make it, you can purchase it until 7pm or until it’s sold out. Think a maple glaze, star-shaped sprinkles, Hershey’s chocolate and salted pretzels. YUM!
Ribs and Rumps, Milton and Fortitude Valley
The name says it all. If you’re a sucker for ribs and steak grilled to perfection, then you can’t go past this mouth-watering menu at Ribs and Rumps! With a range of entrées, sides, ribs, burgers, salads, combos, steaks AND desserts to choose from, it would be cray not to pay a visit for the 4th!
Carolina Kitchen, Coorparoo
For a slice of North Carolina in Brissie, get to Cooparoo and give Carolina Kitchen a go! For all things hot dogs and chili dogs, cheeseburgers and hamburgers, Buffalo wings and BBQ ribs, this is the real American deal! If you want the true experience with all the extras, make sure you grab yourself a Dr Pepper, Grape Fanta or root beer to wash it down. It’s the 4th of July after all!
The Smoke BBQ, New Farm
If the thought of an authentic American BBQ makes your heart skip a beat (in a good way, not in a trip-to-the-Emergency-Room way), then a meal at The Smoke BBQ in New Farm may be in order! For the 4th of July, you can’t go past the Memphis Country Style Pork Belly, the Texas Beef Short Ribs, Hurricane Wings and Aunt Beebe’s Apple Pie - all in that order if you dare, mwahaha. But seriously, go have din-dins and thank me later.
St. James Crabhouse & Kitchen, Kangaroo Point
St. James is the new kidn on the block and it’s the city’s first American-style crab house! Based in Kangaroo Point and just around the corner from the Story Bridge, this is a central hotspot for seafood lovers. Enjoy Moreton Bay bugs, king and snow crab, blue swimmer crab and more with your choice of sauce. Plus, burgers and ribs are on the menu too! This is a fab new way to celebrate the 4th!
Greaser, Fortitude Valley
If you want to partaaay hard for 4th of July, you need to go to Greaser’s Backyard Party! There will be live music from West Texas Crude, open BBQ burgers, a speed cocktail-making competition (I’ve been waiting for this my whole life), whiskey tasting (say whaaat!) and more. In other words, if you miss it, you’re nuts! It kicks off at 6pm, so you have enough time to try their grilled dog before your celebrations get out of hand. Which they won’t, because you’re a responsible adult.
Yard Bird Ale House, Fortitude Valley and Paddington
If you like a bit of everything, you can’t go past Yard Bird Ale House to bring you the goods. They have wraps, pizzas, salads, burgers, tacos and nachos in honour of your Mexican brothers and sisters, and let’s not forget that they have chicken wings! Lots of wings. Garlic and parmesan has me drooling, tbh. If you’re game, try their Death Sentence Wings (sounds promising, doesn’t it?)!
Ribs & Burgers, Fortitude Valley and Woolloongabba
Eight-hour slow-cooked ribs. Fresh, hot, succulent burgers. Need I say more? Better yet, you can choose from two locations to dig in here in Brissie - James Street in Fortitude Valley or Stanley Street in Woolloongabba. Get stuck into their Baby Back Ribs, The Bacon + Cheese Burger and sweet potato fries for the 4th of July! There’s no need to book either – just walk right in!
