It’s no surprise that for many of us, one of the most common thoughts that cross our mind daily is what am I going to wear today? You’re not alone if you find yourself blankly staring at your wardrobe of a morning waiting for a perfectly styled outfit to jump out at you. We understand that as the chilly season sets in, it’s easy to reach for your fave jeans and cardigan combo, but with winter just around the corner, there’s no time like the present to give your winter wardrobe a well-deserved pick me up.
Dressing for the season shouldn’t mean you have to replace all of your summer outfits in favour of an expensive new winter wardrobe. Instead, it’s a chance to invest in some of the on-trend pieces that will update your style with chic vibes but not cost you a small fortune. To help us navigate what to shop this season, we had a chat with personal shopper and stylist, Lucy Hendriks. See a collection of her favourite winter pieces ahead, each of them under $100, and read on for her tips on how to style them for the season.
Whether you know your houndstooth from your plaid or not, there is no denying the impact that check patterns have had on the fashion industry this season. “In winter, nothing pulls together an outfit quite like a well-fitted tailored blazer,” says Lucy. “A blazer that fits and flatters your body shape can take you from work to weekend, and from the boardroom to the bar in style.” She says. We can’t wait to make a statement this season in a tailored check blazer.
BACK IN BLACK
As trends come and go, there is one fashion staple that will always have a place in every winter wardrobe: the leather jacket. “Leather or leather look is a perennial favourite, so a leather jacket will always remain an investment piece for years to come.” Says Lucy.
When asked what the biggest trends will be this season, Lucy explains that vibrant hues, such as red, pink and yellow will be seen everywhere this winter. “Gone are the days where summer was the only season for colour.” She says. Colour blocking never goes out of style and this season it’s all about red and pink. If you’re looking for a winter piece that will become your go-to this season, don’t overlook the power of a red trench coat or a pair red sock booties.
IN THE JEANS
Nothing feels better than fresh, fitted denim and winter is the perfect time to finally get your buns into a new pair of jeans. “A well-cut pair of denim jeans is like a bra for the booty and can work miracles.” Says Lucy. “Look for ones in a darker denim as they’re more slimming and can transition easily from casual to dressy in a snap.” She says.
When it comes to injecting warmth into your winter wardrobe, you can’t go wrong with mixing up fabrics and layering with different textures. Lucy explains that if you’re looking to make a tactile statement, velvet and faux fur would be her picks for the season.
If you’re looking to update your winter wardrobe, but not too sure where to start, Lucy Hendriks will be offering free 20-minute styling session from 24 May until 9 June.
“These sessions will give you a great kick-start for rebooting your style and confidence for the season ahead.” Says Lucy.
“My first and foremost tip to all my ladies is to look for garments and accessories that fit and flatter your shape to create your most flattering silhouette. If it fits you well, you can make a $30 jacket look like a $300 jacket.” She says.
If you’re unsure where to look for inspiration, Lucy suggests that her clients should “look at store windows or the styled mannequins in stores for different ways to style new pieces.” “Alternatively, you can create your own lookbook by cutting out pictures from magazines or pinning favourite looks on Pinterest to get a sense of the styles that you would like to emulate this season.”
You can chat to Lucy Hendriks at the Style Lounge from 24 May until 9 June at Mt Ommaney Centre for a free 20-minute styling session. Week 1 is already completely booked out so be sure to check out the Style Studio to secure your free styling session.
