7 Pieces You Should Ditch (& What To Buy Instead) To Upgrade Your Wardrobe This Summer

7 Pieces You Should Ditch (& What To Buy Instead) To Upgrade Your Wardrobe This Summer

Plus, how you can score them for less!

By Siobhan Taylor | 4th October 2018

With the sudden arrival of October, we’re all scratching our heads and wondering where the year has gone! With summer and all the events it brings us (hello, afternoon drinks, soiree season, and garden parties) just around the corner, now is the perfect time to review your wardrobe and edit for the new season.

And don’t get us wrong: we love an of-the-moment trend as much as anyone! But with the return of a new season and new sartorial inspo, now is the time to give the over-done trends of winter a bit of a breather, and turn our attention to the pieces in our wardrobe that we will reach for right through until the first cold snap of May. And at the end of the day, remember that the most valuable style asset you have is confidence, so don’t be afraid to let your inner-fashionista out to play!

To get our wardrobes up to scratch for the new season, we’re heading to Harbour Town Outlet Shopping Centre. With more than 240 stores including all the big name brands you love (think Michael Kors, Polo Ralph Lauren, Coach, Kate Spade, Oroton) and up to 70% off recommended retail price, Harbour Town is southeast Queensland’s primo destination for designer brands at purse-friendly prices.

Ditch: Heavy activewear
Buy: Lighter, brighter pieces

Some things never change, no matter how warm, cool or rainy the weather may be. Most notably, our fitness routine! Whether you’re kicking butt in a kickbox class, heating things up with HIIT or slowing down with some yoga, this summer we’re leaning towards activewear in bold, playful colours. Pink, magenta and blush tones are dominating both in the gym (courtesy of new season activewear from Lorna Jane and Nike) and during brunch dates in our favourite athleisure pieces from Rockwear. If you’re feeling confident, why not show off all your hard work in the gym by pairing a strappy sports bra underneath a tied-up t-shirt, or even on its own?

Ditch: Woolly pieces
Buy: Soft, breathable linen

As a lightweight and breathable material, linen is perfect for summer. And while linen playsuits and camisoles have been trending for a while, this summer we’re taking things one step further and integrating linen in every area of our wardrobe. Whether you want a classy dress for date night, a comfortable office outfit, or something playful for a Saturday night out with the girls, this new take on linen is one that we’re looking forward to sporting every day this summer. Glassons, Seed Heritage and Ally Fashion all have a wide range of linen pieces to try this season.

Ditch: The simple one-piece
Buy: Bold patterns and shapes

If you took your swimsuit out of winter storage and felt disheartened by its simplistic style, now is the perfect time to experiment with bolder colours, patterns and shapes. Tigerlily, Bikini Island and Seafolly are all embracing tribal prints in a wide range of blues, oranges and teals. From strappy one pieces to flattering bikinis, there are plenty of styles to try this summer if you want to hit the beach in confidence.

Ditch: Tiny clutches
Buy: Versatile road trip-ready tote bags

As much as we love a dainty purse or clutch for evening events, when it comes to summer we’re all about road trips and getaways! Opting for a large, durable tote bag from the likes of Colette and Oroton means you can fill it up with bikinis, sundresses, sandals, and other road trip essentials. If you don’t have too many getaways on your horizon, a smaller bag (such as a shoulder bag) from Mimco will keep all of your purse essentials nearby, while still being a fresh new look for the season.

Ditch: Ankle booties
Buy: Beach party apropos slides and wedges

Ah, the humble summer sandal. We firm believers that there are few pieces in your wardrobe that are as versatile or as valuable as summer sandals! Opt for tan leather slides and a white linen dress for a look that will take you from weekend adventures to the office, or get flirty with a woven set of wedges that look just as cute at a wedding as they do at Sunday brunch! Nine West, Betts, Famous Footwear and Windsor Smith boast a wide range of beach party apropos slides, sandals and wedges that are the perfect way to refresh your wardrobe for the new season. Sorry ankle booties, but we won’t be needing you for a few months.
