Undressing for the Earth

Undressing for the Earth

Breaking the mould with an evening of festivities and feel-good fashion, environmental activists Undress Runways are coming to Surfers Paradise for one night only. Sarah McAlpine catches up with co-founder Kirsten Stallard.

By Sarah McAlpine | 23rd April 2014

Following resounding success at their Brisbane and Melbourne shows, Undress Runways are hosting a free rooftop runway show in Surfers Paradise on April 26. With music and markets kicking off at 3pm and runway fashion from 5pm, guests will enjoy a visual feast of Australia’s best sustainable designers as the sun goes down.

You don’t need us to tell you that vintage has been hot for a while now, but there’s much more to making responsible wardrobe choices than hunting through your local Salvos. If you’re yet to fully jump on board the sustainable fashion train, check out my chat with Undress Runways marketing guru Kirsten Stallard below.

Sarah: Why do we need to be supporting the sustainable fashion industry?

Kirsten: Sustainable fashion is the future of the industry - not just because we want it to be but also because we need it to be. There are some pretty alarming things happening in the fashion industry that are extremely harmful to our environment and also to the people involved in producing our clothes. Every garment has a story and sustainable fashion is about making that story a happy one! It's about enjoying fashion responsibly through being aware of where a garment has come from, what it's made of and what you're going to do with it when you're done.

Sarah: Tell us about some of the designers showcasing at Undress Gold Coast.

Kirsten: Undress Gold Coast will feature 18 sustainable and ethical designers from all over Australia. There's everything from swimwear, to eveningwear, to accessories and lingerie. The thing that sets these designers a cut above the rest is that they all are leading the way in the industry - through incorporating sustainable values such as ethical production, organic fabrics, vintage materials and much more. For a full list of the designers featuring on the Undress Runway click here.

Sarah: What can we expect on the night?

Kirsten: Undress Gold Coast will begin with an afternoon market featuring some of the labels that will be showing on the runway later on. There'll be music, food, pop-up bars and most importantly - the twilight rooftop runway show. Picture cutting-edge sustainable fashion, a green runway, the sun going down over Surfers Paradise, a chilled-out crowd of sustainable fashionistas and you've got Undress Gold Coast.
