The Three QUT Emerging Fashion Designers To Watch

Ones to watch!

By Leith Wilson | 24th May 2016

Style met with emerging fashion designers Jordan Anderson, Felicia Balsategui and Cielle Marchal to chat about their collections.

Meet Jordan and his brand Elvrik!

Where did you get the inspiration for your collection?

My collection, titled “Global Citizen", was inspired by a feeling I took home after a 13-month exchange program in Berlin. I had the opportunity to visit 14 countries as well as draw references from the feel-good Disney film Cool Runnings, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and ’90s sportswear.

What made you want to study fashion?

I wanted to be a creator of a wearable art form that enables individuals to express themselves and create their own identity.

Where do you see yourself in five years from now?

As the creative director of Elvrik.

What’s your favourite piece in your collection?

#GobalCitizen red Jacket

What has been a fashion highlight in your career so far?

Winning the iD Dunedin Emerging Designer Award in 2016.

Meet Felicia and her collection Chimera!

Where did you get the inspiration for your collection?

For this collection I drew inspiration from Japanese street style. I love working with colours and prints and found this style’s aesthetic to be fashionable yet fun – two aspects that I find are integral to my own style.

How would you describe your current collection?

It’s a pretty full-on combination of different colours, textures and techniques but it makes for an exciting collection for those wanting something a little different.

Who are your design icons?

It ranges from high-end designers such as Moschino, Versace and Gucci to more obscure designers such as Hood By Air and Gypsy Sport.

How would you describe your collection in three words?

Kawaii, mind and melt.

Meet Cielle and her collection What Follows.

Where did you get the inspiration for your collection?

My family is deeply embedded in my “What Follows” collection. Woven throughout the pieces are my father’s artworks, my mother’s earthly roots and my sense of environmental and social justice.

What’s your favourite piece in your collection?

I’d have to say “The Face” dress, which is developed from an old portrait my father created in the ’80s. I later developed and manipulated the colours and structure, creating a very striking and bold print, which I printed onto polyester.

How would you describe your own personal style?

Earthy, comfortable and mix-match.

Do you see yourself working in the design industry for a long time?

At this point in my life, I’d say yes. I definitely want to experiment and experience a variety of roles and areas within the fashion industry as well. Working within the creative industries is a must for me.
