Giddy Up: How To Nail Spring Racing Fashion Trends In 2018

Here’s how to pick a winner!

By Bethan Warrior & Siobhan Taylor | 2nd October 2018

With the Spring Racing Carnival just around the corner, we're already making plans, scoping out new season trends, and preparing for a dynamite day.

For racegoers, the stakes aren’t only high on the race track but off the track, too. Whether you want to win the coveted Best Dressed title at Fashions On The Field or impress with an on-trend but fashion-forward look, we've put together our top Spring Racing fashion trends for the 2018 Spring Racing Carnival. Giddy up!

Caulfield Cup

The first event of the season and it’s all about embracing those stunning spring trends! This event is the perfect time to embrace your girly side. Floral dresses and midi skirts are a classic option, however with Spring guidelines being less stringent, feel free to try a shorter hemline or showing off your shoulders. If you like a little more edge with your fashion, a pastel pantsuit is an awesome way to mix up the trends while still looking every bit the elegant race-goer.

Cox Plate

The Cox Plate race day celebrates floral features and spring colours. We’re loving the resurgence of yellow this spring and think it’s a great go-to colour for an eye-popping outfit. Pairing it back with pastel accessories is a great way to soften your outfit for that light-hearted, spring feel. Incorporating some floral motifs in your millinery or jewellery is a great way to meet the day’s theme perfectly!

Derby Day

There’s something about black and white that oozes old-time glamour. This a great day to channel your inner Audrey Hepburn for a day of sleek and sophisticated racing fashion. When you're limited with your colours, try interesting silhouettes and shapes or experimenting with your millinery.

Melbourne Cup

The bold and beautiful is what it’s all about for Melbourne Cup! A celebration of bright colours, captivating prints and statement accessories, this is the time to whip out that showstopper outfit. Melbourne Cup is not the day to be worried about being extra, try making unexpected colour combos and mixing prints to set your look apart. When it comes down to it, this day is about one thing…fun!

As much as we love fashion, we feel like it’s appropriate to call in an expert when it comes to menswear. We spoke to basketball player-turned tailor, menswear expert, and Director of Wil Valor, Mark Ferguson about the spring racing trends men should be aware of this Spring Racing Carnival. Want to win the Best Dressed title at Fashions On The Field? Swing by their slick new Brisbane Quarter showroom for all your styling needs.

“If you are thinking about visiting Melbourne for the Spring Carnival, now is the time to get your outfits sorted. If you'd like a bespoke outfit, it's important to get a head start as normal delivery time is 4 weeks – so, get moving! Spring Carnival requires 2/3 suiting options. For Melbourne Cup, choose a suit that combines well with the colours of the season. I hope to see more greys than blues this year. I personally prefer a suit for races but the odd jacket and trouser combination will be very popular. One of the season’s colours is deep dusty pink; don’t be surprised if there are few pink jackets on show! Other colours to watch out for are olive and rust.

One of the last considerations, but often the most important, are the finishing details: the hat, pocket-handkerchief, lapel pin and shoes. Get organised as these pieces can make or break an outfit!”
