The Outerwear Trends Every Cool Girl Is Obsessed With Right Now

TIME TO RUG UP

By Victoria Lewis | 1st May 2026

In true Australian fashion, the moment it gets under 25 degrees Celsius, it’s time to brace for the winter and get layering. That (dreaded) time of year is upon us, where we must start the search for the blazers, coats, and jackets that will both keep us cosy while, of course, staying chic. After living it for many years, we’re here to help you avoid that seasonal scramble to find the outer layer that will elevate, not downgrade, your everyday looks.

Luckily for you and your internal organs, we’ve been collating the looks from recent runways, celeb appearances, and the big brands and local labels setting the tone, to round up all the outerwear trends of 2026, as well as the pieces that are living rent-free in our minds (and our online shopping carts).

The outerwear trend report

We are here to report that this year in outerwear, Y2K aesthetics have become more sophisticated, with bold, faux-fur-trimmed coats and printed jackets taking centre stage. These statement-making pieces do the heavy lifting for your outfit, giving you instant fashion-girl status without lifting a finger (or harming an animal).

Meanwhile, the old-money look is holding strong, with cropped trench coats and collarless necklines favouring tradition across designer collections and the high street this season. On a similar note, blazers are getting the hourglass treatment with sculpted shoulders and exaggerated cinching at the waist, instantly dressing up outfits everywhere.

Utilitarian aesthetics popularised in the early 2010s are also back and really making an entrance (side note, skinny jeans are on the up again too), and cargo jackets are bringing an androgynous edge. Funnel neck bombers are taking on a variety of forms and fabrications, seen in cotton, faux leather, and checked prints once strictly reserved for blazers – it’s the boxy, relaxed antidote for cool-girl casual, put-together dressing.

Also getting an honourable mention this season would have to be the shacket. Yes, you read correctly. With a subtle twist on the infamous silhouette, shackets are being redefined with elastic waists and elevated fabrics, and love it or hate it – it’s happening.

The pieces we are loving

These are the outerwear pieces we are currently obsessing over (and you will be too):
