Here's Our Real Red Carpet Review Of The Oscars 2020!

We’re seeing red, gold and Blac Chyna?

By Dinushka Gunasekara | 11th February 2020

The Oscars red carpet has been rolled out, strut upon and we have opinions. Fi, G and D (me) took a look at all the garbs featured at this year’s night of nights and talk the good, bad and downright confusing.

AMERICA FERRERA | Alberta Ferretti

Fi: At first I thought she looked like a medieval mamma. Different for the Oscars, but concept is on point.

G: If I didn’t know the context, not my vibe. Very 2006. But, loved the ode to her culture.

D: I don’t remember this scene in Ugly Betty but I back it.

BILLIE EILISH | Chanel

Fi: Do your roots.

G: How very Billie.

D: This is my kind of business attire.

BILLY PORTER | Giles Deacon Couture

Fi: Back in BC at Roman Fashion Week, this is what I imagine the gods to be wearing front row.

G: I just… I just… it’s Billy Porter.

D: He looks like a beautiful phoenix but for the Oscars it might’ve been best to leave this outfit in the ashes.

BLAC CHYNA | Donna Matotoshi

Fi: I have to say it: why is she there?

G: ^ I was going to say that! Dig the blue fringe though.

D: The sultriest of dressing gowns.

BRIE LARSON | Celine

Fi: Stunning. Best on ground. I honestly could not love that more.

G: Nailed it. Very Oscars.

D: Petition to make the definition of ‘glorious’ this outfit.

CAITRIONA BALFE | Valentino

Fi: I actually love this, super elegant and flattering for her figure.

G: Dollop of cream above and below.

D: Super swoopy.

CHARLIZE THERON | Dior Haute Couture

Fi: Corporate, elegant and classic.

G: Jane Fonda meets Meredith Blake (Editor’s Note: from Parent Trap). Would’ve loved a red lip.

D: Not my cup of tea but when Charlize is serving it, I’ll sip.

FLORENCE PUGH | Louis Vuitton

Fi: I’m here for Florence’s makeup and effortless up-do.

G: What a pretty little cupcake. Refreshing colour to see on the carpet but can’t say I’m obsessed; although she nailed the accessories.

D: She looks like dragon scales and I dig it.

GAL GADOT | Givenchy

Fi: The skirt reminds me of my yearly Christmas present from my husband’s grandmother; lace, handmade coat hangers (for the delicates).

G: Gal, my gal. Take off the necklace and make the pink a satin skirt and then we’ll be talking. Love the colour combo.

D: This is a lace case to be forgotten. Not a fan.

JANELLE MONAE | Ralph Lauren

Fi: Every detail of this I’m loving sick.

G: Janelle Mon-YAY! This is so lit, literally. Love, love, love it!

D: The most beautiful disco ball. I absolutely ADORE!

KRISTEN WIIG | Maison Valentino Couture

Fi: Inspired by David Attenborough’s Great Barrier Reef doco series.

G: A v-word came to mind, but it wasn’t Valentino. I don’t know if it’s because it’s Kristen but I couldn’t take the classic Valentino design seriously at first. On someone else it would’ve been a statement.

D: If a tomato sauce bottle went luxe you’d get this.

LAURA DERN | Armani

Fi: Burlesque meets princess.

G: I actually thought it was liquid dripping down (Editor’s Note: Georgie wears glasses).

D: Please put the tassels elsewhere. Preferably not in frame.

MAYA RUDOLPH | Valentino

Fi: So far, I’m stoked to see such a gorgeous colour bomb at the Oscars.

G: Dig the colour clashing. Not a flattering shape and did her daughter do her eyeshadow?

D: Between the slick bob and the oversized gown, I want to see her swish around so bad.

MINDY KALING | Dolce & Gabbana

Fi: She nailed it. Shape, tone, colour and accessories – tick.

G: Dig this for Mindy, great shape on her.

D: Since when was Mindy royalty because she looks like the regalest of the land.

NATALIE PORTMAN | Dior Haute Couture

Fi: Very Star Wars-esque from Nat.

G: Super sci-fi and super fly.

D: Aesthetic activism done oh so right.

Fi: Doesn’t wow me from the back but she could literally wear anything

G: How very Penelope. Safe but sweet.

D: Can’t go wrong when you play it this safe. You gotta risk it to get the biscuit.

REBEL WILSON | Jason Wu

Fi: Look at our Rebel – she’s amazing! Would’ve paired a red lip with a red nail, though.

G: Get it girl, super flattering!

D: I swear this was a skit on Thank God You’re Here. Good for her!

ROONEY MARA | Alexander McQueen

Fi: Actually love this on Rooney. Would’ve paired with some luxe accessories.

G: Risky move but Rooney pulls it off. Very gothic chic. Could’ve done with some earrings.

D: Wednesday Addams looks stunning on her wedding day.

SALMA HAYEK | Gucci

Fi: Grecian goddess meets most of my Year 12 formal fashion.

G: Who’s getting married?

D: I didn’t know they had fairy godmothers in Ancient Greece.

SANDRA OH | Elie Saab

Fi: I’ve always had one rule: make one statement not two. I feel like pick the shoulders or the train.

G: There’s a lot going on but if it’s going to go on, it’s at the Oscars. I wouldn’t wear it, though.

D: Someone took “If you’re a bird, I’m a bird” a bit too seriously.

SAOIRSE RONAN | Gucci

A post shared by Gucci (@gucci) on

Fi: I’ve never been a fan of Saoirse’s red carpet fashion, but I have to say I’m really digging the exaggerated peplum. She looks divine.

G: So conflicted, don’t know if I love or hate. The lilac is great though.

D: Sexy Ursula. I dig.

SCARLETT JOHANSSON | Oscar de la Renta

Fi: Love this a hundred thousand times more than the movie she was nominated for.

G: Best dressed hands down. Loved this for everything. Toned down makeup is great. Shape is great. It’s all just bloody great.

D: Sleeeeeeeeek.

TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET | Prada

Fi: Hi, I’m here to fix your sink.

G: Totally thought it was a onesie. I’m actually really into this. Great colour, great hair. Just all great. Sexy French mechanic vibes.

D: Every mailman in every young adult novel.

ZAZIE BEETS | Thom Browne

Fi: Can pull off a corset.

G: Dig that it’s a two piece but reminds me weirdly of a Barbie housewife outfit.

D: A super chic raven.
