Shopping can be dangerous at the best of times. But when you’re in the comfort of your own home, rugged up and cosy, probably multi-tasking while watching TV and with no change room or shopping pal in sight to give you advice (or the #realtalk to stop you going overboard), the cursor can be a real curse!
Online shopping, while convenient, has led us all to make silly snap decisions, buy clothes that were definitely the wrong size and make our bank accounts give us the silent treatment until next pay day.
So we’ve come up with 10 online shopping commandments to follow the next time you’re browsing the web. Trust us, these rules will make your bank account (and your wardrobe) love you!
1. Thou shalt always shop around for the best deal
If you don’t shop around, how do you know you’re getting the best deal? Never buy the first thing you see online, because chances are it’s somewhere else ON SALE! Searching for the product code or name on Google can help, but there are also plenty of sites that do the hard work for you, such as Fashion Lane.
2. Thou Shalt Make Sure The Site Is Legit
When you’re shopping the sales, your brain might be signalling two things: 1) “Wow! These deals are great, I can buy ALL the things”; and 2) “Are these deals too good to be true? Is this for real? Is it safe?” To check if the website is safe to shop on, you should search Google for reviews of the company, check the contact/about pages and always make sure the website’s checkout or payment page is secure with https:// instead of http://.
3. Thou Shalt Check Sizing. Always
There are no changing rooms online and comparing yourself to the model wearing the clothing is not a great alternative. To avoid getting the bad news delivered in the post, always check the actual dimensions of garments and whether things are in American, European or Australian sizing.
4. Thou Shalt NEVER Purchase While Using Wi-Fi In A Public Space
Put down the phone or laptop – that cute blouse can wait! It’s NEVER a good idea to use a shared wi-fi connection to access or perform sensitive tasks (i.e, banking or shopping) as the open nature of the network allows for snooping and some people may be able to access your private information.
5. Thou Shalt Always Make Sure The Shipping Isn’t Super Expensive
There’s no point in buying something advertised for a steal if the postage is so exuberant they’re actually stealing from you. Weigh up the benefits of postage and whether it’s worth purchasing the item overall when you add it together.
6. Thou Shalt Look For Discount Shopper Codes
While the first commandment is to always shop around, sometimes there still aren’t many deals available on the item you MUST have now! Searching for promo, discount or shopper codes for the brand may help you find a sneaky code that you can add at the checkout for a certain percentage off, free postage or a “buy one, get one free” deal. Score! And the codes aren’t just for fashion either – there are heaps for pizza places for when you’re online shopping on the couch.
7. Honour Thy eNewsletter Sign Ups and Reap The Rewards
Signing up to fashion websites’ eNewsletters can let you know about the deals before everyone else, give you early access or discount codes and possibly even get special birthday deals.
8. Thou Shalt Check The Basket Three Times. No Less.
This is not a set-and-forget process, guys. To avoid going down the fashion shopping rabbit hole and only reappearing when your cash runs out, you should always check your basket regularly to ensure you really want/need those items. And no, refreshing the checkout page three times doesn’t count.
9. Thou Shalt Know the Power of PayPal
Activating PayPal’s Refunded Returns service means you’ll never* have to pay for a return again. They’ll refund you the cost of sending items back up to eight times per year. *Check out the full conditions here.
10. Thou Shalt Practice Thy Self-Control
Pros know the best time to strike and when it’s time to give those buying thumbs and fingers (and the bank account) a rest. Just remember you don’t need it all… right now, at least.
