The whistle blew and our Queensland girls had done it. Snatching the Trans-Tasman Netball Championship win from the NSW Swifts in the dying minutes was no easy feat. But the Queensland Firebirds did not let up on the attack; after two consecutive years as runners up, they were ready for a victorious war cry! You’re probably used to seeing these girls in all their purple and gold glory, so to commemorate their final-second win, we decided to celebrate with a totally luxe shoot to take a peek at the girls’ off-the-court-selves. Meet the stars of our August shoot: cover girl, Kim Ravaillion; captain, Laura Geitz; powerhouse, Beryl Friday; and the player who nailed the winning shot, Gretel Tippett.

“The person I most admire is Laura Geitz. She took me under her wing and is someone you can idolise and take a lot from as a young netballer.” Kim Ravaillion

I am originally from Fairfield, NSW.

My greatest challenge on my netball journey was I would say being away from my family and my twin sister. I went to the AIS when I was 17 and then to the Firebirds when I was 19.

If I had a tip for someone wanting to represent their state or country in netball it would be just try your hardest at every game if you get knocked down never give up just keep trying.

The person who has had the most influence on my career is I would say Mum and Dad. Dad always pushed me and made me keep things simple. He kept me grounded made things really clear and Mum is so supportive.

I realised I wanted to be a netball player when I was about 11 and started playing rep netball and I really liked the competitiveness.

But if I didn't play netball, I'd love to be horse rider.

When I'm not playing or training I like to go to the beach or hang out with friends.

The best piece of advice I've ever been given, never give up.

I live and manage my life by the motto never give up.

If I were an animal I would be a horse.

My favourite sports team is The Firebirds.

My style icon is Angelina Jolie or Jessica Alba.

The person I most admire is Laura Geitz, she took me under her wing. She is someone you can idolise and take a lot from as a young netballer and she carries herself so well and I want to be like her.

And lastly, my theme song is Old Thing Back, the Notorious B.I.G.

“If I had a tip for someone wanting to represent their state or country in netball, be really passionate, it is the most wonderful accolade but it is not easy and you have to face the challenges and see them as part of the journey.” Laura Geitz

I am originally from Allora.

My greatest challenge on my netball journey was in 2012 when I was just struggling to enjoy the game and found it a real challenge. I was tired and run down and needed some time away from the game. Having a break was a tricky thing to do but was the best thing for me and allowed me to come back bigger and better for the following year.

If I had a tip for someone wanting to represent their state or country in netball it would be really be passionate about wanting to represent your State or Country. It is the most wonderful accolade but it is not easy and you have to face the challenges and see them as part of the journey. Learn to take the good with the bad and the challenges make all the good times worth the ride.

The person who has had the most influence on my career is my parents. Mum and Dad from a young age would drive me around all over the country side and even now my mum and family support me to do what I do out on the netball court.

I realised I wanted to be a netball player when I played by first game of netball out in Warwick.

But if I didn't play netball, I'd love to play tennis.

When I'm not playing or training I am spending time with my dog Charlie and my husband, Mark.

The best piece of advice I've ever been given was do your best and forget the rest.

If I were an animal I would be a horse.

My favourite sports team is The Firebirds and any of the Queensland teams, Broncos and Lions.

My style icon is Elle McPherson, she is pretty amazing.

The person I most admire is there is not one person but at the moment it would have to be Bella Harry who is battling bone cancer and is a huge netball fan.

And lastly, my theme song is Wake Me Up, Avicii.

“If I were an animal, I would be a giraffe because of my long legs.” Beryl Friday

I am originally from Ingham.

My greatest challenge on my netball journey was Injury after injury, but kept battling and played through as my goal was to play for the Firebirds and I was not going to fail.

If I had a tip for someone wanting to represent their state or country in netball it would be train hard and back yourself.

The person who has had the most influence on my career is my Mum, she supports me no matter what and picks me up when I need it.

I realised I wanted to be a netball player when I started playing at the age of 8 after Mum made me play netball when I did not really want to and she dragged me along crying.

But if I didn't play netball, I'd love to play I don’t know maybe tennis.

When I'm not playing or training I work and I do Pilates every day and hang out with my friend Brit.

The best piece of advice I've ever been given was believe in yourself.

I live and manage my life by the motto everything happens for a reason and if it is meant to be it will be.

If I were an animal I would be a giraffe because of my long legs.

My style icon is Beyonce or Cara Delevingne.

The person I most admire is my Mum, she is a nurse up in Ingham she is in charge of Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander health for the region.

And lastly, my theme song is Ms Jackson, Outkast, or any Beyonce song.

“If I didn’t play netball, I’d love to play tennis so I can wear the frilly dresses and be like Maria Sharipova.” Gretel Tippett

I am originally from the Gold Coast.

My greatest challenge on my netball journey was my first ever state league game of netball after coming across from playing basketball, I shot 13 air balls in one game!

If I had a tip for someone wanting to represent their state or country in netball it would be the harder you work the luckier you get and just be patient.

The person who has had the most influence on my career is Kim Ravaillion, my roommate has taught me a lot including telling me to shoot that final shot in the Grand Final this year.

I realised I wanted to be a netball player when I saw the ANZ champs on TV and I saw how athletic and competitive it was and I was hooked.

But if I didn't play netball, I'd love to play tennis so I can wear the frilly dresses and be like Maria Sharapova.

When I'm not playing or training I studying nutrition, cooking or at the beach.

The best piece of advice I've ever been given was do what you love!

If I were an animal I would be a dolphin.

My favourite sports team are Sydney Swans and North Melbourne. I have to say that because of my brothers.

My style icon is Pia Miller.

The person I most admire is Kurt and Joel Tippett.

And lastly, my theme song is Wildest Dreams, Taylor Swift.
