Brisbane, Meet Five By Flynn: The Streetwear Pop-Up Hits This Weekend

All icons, no idols

Have you ever wanted a new shirt so badly you created a whole fashion brand? Well Louie Collins did just that and now Five By Flynn is shaping up to be Australia’s next big name in fashion.

You’ve seen their iconic logos, heard of their infamous parties, and maybe even worn their iconic collaborations. And now they’re taking over Brisbane’s hottest precinct, James Street, for one weekend only.

Louie Collins, Sydney born and bred, has a lot of energy. Not a designer by trade, he’s built a cult favourite streetwear label worn by the likes of Sopha Dopha, Ruel, and Oscar Piastri. But before the brand took off, Louie was behind a successful events company called Dan’s Ave. “I just like having a good time” he says. His parties were that good, that venues began reaching out to him to run events. But Dan’s Ave wasn’t his forever. The real goal? Finding the perfect camp collar shirt was a struggle. So he thought “well, why don’t I just try and start making these shirts myself” – as you do, right?

Louie admits he was a bit naive to jump into the deep end. At just 20 years old, he drove to a fabric store in Alexandria, where staff laughed in his face. But, he took the list of 10 steps required to make a shirt and began to drive all around Sydney. Launching the brand in late 2019, the original idea was to make five shirts each week. From there the number turned more into a name. Now Five By Flynn has evolved to seasonal drops and has expanded with a popular womenswear line thanks to the help of designer Eleni. “We are more concise and thoughtful with the designs”, Louie explains, aiming to stay both commercially relevant and fashion forward.

As the eldest of six kids, Louie attributes his creativity to his family. “My family are all very creative people as well” he says. You can see his brother Chester’s artwork and youngest brother Orlando’s Franko Jewellery in their Paddington flagship store. His sister, Eloise, is working full time in the business too.

There’s no stopping them. “I’m such a competitive person that I will not let it lose”, Louie says. His recent wins include a major collaboration with leading womenswear brand Glassons, collections with Jack Steele and Sammy Robinson, multiple popup stores, and even a sandwich with Cut Lunch Deli.

“At the moment there’s no rules with who can work with each other” Louie says. “It’s really enjoyable working with friends of the brand. We want to build a community made up of everyone who is their own icon”.

One of the brands main goals? More stores across Australia. “Physical space is super important” Louie says. “In a world where online business is only getting more competitive, having that physical space is crucial”.

“Last year was pretty wild and this year the goal is to refine our product and find synergy along it all” Louie says. And only halfway through the year, they have achieved that and more. Launching four drops, two pop-up stores and one huge fashion week party, it’s clear they’re just getting started.

Still, their calendar on the wall is stacked. “Too many cool opportunities you can’t say no to”, laughs Louie.

This weekend Five By Flynn brings their first Queensland popup to none other than James Street. You’ll find the latest drop alongside coffee by Allpress Espresso and custom Bobby drinks. Louie himself will be there excited to meet the growing Queensland base.

“The best part about the pop up is meeting new customers and having a chat”, he says. What shouldn’t you leave without? The advice from Louie: “the layered tops are really in at the moment for women, and for the men, the knitted polo is a must-have”.

Gold Coast, you’re next. A Mermaid Beach pop-up is already in the works for October. And for summer? Louie has his sights set on Noosa.

Louie Collins was “in the pursuit of a good time” and ended up creating one of Australia’s hottest new streetwear labels. As Louie puts it: “You’re your own icon when you wear Five By Flynn”.

When asked about their dream collab? Louie laughs “the ultimate collab would definitely be F1”. Given Oscar Piastri was seen wearing Five By Flynn, that doesn’t seem too far off.
