In The Mind Of Sass & Bide's Head Designer

Stay sassy.

By Annabelle Beirne | 2nd March 2017

I chatted to Sophia Berman about her role leading the Sass & Bide Design Collective team and the inspiration behind the Spring/Fall 17 collection, Moon Shadow.

Q: Why did you choose to become a designer?
A: It combines so many of the things I love – art, colour, drawing, craft… and I suppose being able to wear it is a pretty big plus!

Q: What do you believe to be the aesthetic of the Sass & Bide Design Collective?
A: Innovative and interesting, with a focus on the new while remaining true to the core values of Sass & Bide. We are a group of designers who all have different strengths and skills, but a unified vision of what Sass & Bide style is.

Q: What is your view on the importance of fashion in day-to-day life?
A: What we wear has the power to change our day and our mood - it can comfort us, give us strength, attract others, and communicate without words.

Q: Tell us a little bit about your background in designing at Sass & Bide.
A: I first started designing at Sass & Bide almost 10 years ago, working very closely with [founders] Heidi and Sarah-Jane. I learnt so much from them, both creatively and personally, and grew in my role as the business grew. It is now quite amazing to be part of this next chapter of the company – building a new era with such a great team of designers.

Q: As Head Designer, how do you manage your work-life balance?
A: I have been fortunate to work with many amazing women, including the founders of Sass & Bide, who have inspired me in having both a career and a family. There is certainly not much time for procrastination at home or at work, but creating beautiful things makes it worthwhile!

Q: How would you describe the Sass and Bide woman?
A: She is confident and creative, with a unique sense of style. We design with not just one woman in mind, as I think Sass & Bide can be worn by many different women and in different ways. It is her love of life and her freedom of expression which makes her a Sass & Bide woman.

Q: How do you think audiences will connect with the Moon Shadow collection on an emotional level?
A: There is a really evocative and alluring mix of unexpected textures – Pleated metallic lurex fabrics, copper sequins, velvets, leather and romantic sheer georgettes

Q: The Moon Shadow collection is inspired by a Cat Stevens song, which was a 1976 hit. Which ’70s icons did you look to for inspiration when designing the collection?
A: We were more inspired by the feeling of the song and the time. The ’70s were alive with social change; there definitely was an influence of the women’s liberation and bohemia. Both the song and the time were filled with optimism – a new lightness.

Q: Velvet is set to make a huge comeback in Autumn/Winter fashion. What are the biggest benefits of wearing this fabric?
A: It’s a beautiful soft texture – a little bit nostalgic or rock and [roll], depending on the styling.

Q: Do you have a favourite pair of sunglasses from the new range?
A: Sass & Bide Precious Division are my favourites for this season. The dusty pink frames go back perfectly with so many pieces in the collection.

Q: What look from the collection best demonstrates the folky influence behind Moon Shadow?
A: The soft pink floral print in the Perfect Spaces dress.

Q: What 2017 Sass & Bide projects are you most excited about?
A: One super-exciting project (that unfortunately I can’t talk about right now!), and the development of new designs and techniques for an always-evolving Sass & Bide.
